Cable and satellite providers are planning to push pornography for greater profit in the currently spiraling economy.

Pornographers are planning to lower the cost of adult-oriented material, according to Noel Bouché of the National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families. He cites the cause as the downturn in the economy combined with the Obama administration's confirmation of David Ogden, a former porn company attorney, as the second in command at the Justice Department.

"I think (those factors have) increased the boldness of the companies that are producing hard-core pornography, to promote it with greater gusto," Bouché contends.

He believes while the material may be marketed to adults, it could end up with a youthful audience. "That's the key. Anybody can say, 'We're just marketing this to a certain segment, we're just marketing this to adults' -- but the reality is that children are going to have access to this," he adds.

Advertising Age reports there is a tremendous profit to be made in porn for satellite and cable operators.

"Every industry, of course, is looking to cut costs, to target audiences and potential customers that are going to increase the bottom line," Bouché concludes. "This is pure profit for some of these satellite providers."

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

Which, believe it or not, I saw once. Back when TV stations still used film for news gathering, the film guy at a TV station showed a reel of "outtakes" of porn films. Such things as people sliding off one another by accident, nude scenes where the film reel ran out, mikes in the shot, all sorts of production errors.

That guy was fired (in disgrace), the film lab and its porn reel are long gone...but I wouldn't be surprised to see if someone released that film at a discount price. And they had it in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart.
