Sigh. But of course they are. Church says it will picket Richardson's funeral

Philadelphia Daily News

THOSE CHARMERS from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., better known as those people parading around with "God Hates Fags" signs, are at it again: The group says it will picket the funeral of Natasha Richardson, the Tony-winning actress and wife of Liam Neeson who died after a skiing accident Wednesday at the age of 45.

With the same verve, bizarre capitalization and disconnect with reality typical of its news releases, WBC announced:

"God appointed the Bunny Slope to Ensnare the Simple Sluts of Doomed America! Thank God for the Bunny Slope of Cursed Quebec, Canada!"

Westboro Baptist Church, with a congregation of about 70 members, seems to do little but try to get its message into the news via picketing random media-heavy events. It tends to get the most outraged news coverage for turning up at funerals for American soldiers killed in action. It started doing that in 2005. It also recently picketed the 2008 inauguration, the pope's visit to America last April and the National Holocaust Museum.

Besides Richardson, who the church says has been targeted because of her donations to AIDS research, her marriage to Liam Neeson, (it's not his first) and her involvement in theater, which the church sees as a haven for homosexuality (SatTatt could not even make this up), Westboro Baptist Church has also said it would demonstrate outside the funerals of the following disparate people:

Matthew Shepard, Heath Ledger, Jerry Falwell, the 50 people who died in the recent Buffalo plane crash, Coretta Scott King, Fred "Mr." Rogers, Bernie Mac, Tony Snow, Obama's grandmother Madelyn Payne Dunham, four Boy Scouts killed in a sudden storm in Iowa, dozens of soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan, and Gordon B. Hinckley, former president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints;

What is there to say about this insane bunch of inbred cretins?

1. They can't even get their facts straight.
Well, it was Neeson's first marriage and her second.

These people are mentally ill. I hope they get arrested.

2. Good Lord, these people are nuts.
How do they believe this has anything to do with the teachings of Christ? It's bizarre beyond words.

I do love the caption beneath the photo of Natasha Richardson:
Westboro Baptist Church will picket Broadway actress Natasha Richardson's funeral for a variety of reasons, all of them stupid.

6. That's exactly what I was asking!
Who is funding these people? I think it might matter a lot. Living and travel expenses for that group are nothing to sneeze at. They can't hold regular jobs and still be available to push hatred all over the country. I don't believe they are likely to get by on small donations from individual hatemongers. If there's a deep pocket, that person/group should be exposed for what they are.

4. They really have become a parody of themselves
No SNL skit or Jon Stewart monologue could make these people any more ridiculous and silly then they've become.

They have crossed over into being just flat out pathetic.

10. Normally, I would agree with you
but when they show up at funerals, they have chosen to focus that hatred on people who are already in an emotionally painful state. If they showed up at my house today, I'd find them ridiculous and mock them. If the showed up at the funeral of someone I love, I don't know if I could view them as objectively.

13. I lived in Quebec for a year.
THE BEST food, people, culture, clothes, flowers and let's never forget all those Boulangeries on every corner. I envy you. I'd still be there but Quebec City, yes I petitioned, would not let me send my son to an English school in Morin Heights. I regret my decision to leave.

9. They're not insane nor are they stupid
They're lawyers, albeit sleazy ones who think they've found a Golden Ticket...if only they could cash it! Including Phelps himself, at least seven members of his family have practiced law at some time. My theory is that the Phelps family wants to get arrested or to have their civil rights infringed, providing an opening for lawsuits and monetary compensation.

15. I would beg to differ with you about "insane" and "stupid," but it's true that they're lawyers.
THAT is where their money comes from...filing and winning lawsuits defending their First Amendment right to do whatever they please every time someone tries to stop them. They welcome any legal attempt to stop them because they can then file a lawsuit, win, and get scads of money for it. It's a great way to make a living as far as they're concerned.

I would really like to see a group of "Angels" like the ones that came along at one of the Buffalo plane-crash funerals show up at every single public appearance they make and surround them and drown them out.

20. There was an expose on Phelps done a while back...
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 08:37 AM by TheMightyFavog
It claimed that Phelps bilked a bunch of fundraising candy companies out of a bunch of money. He forced his kids to go out and sell candy 12+ hours a day, if the kids did not make quote, he beat the shit out of them.

... that as much as I hate those motherfuckers, and believe with all of my heart that if there is a God and a Hell that S/He will send them there, that they have the right to do what they do.

I still wish I had the right to beat the shit out of them, but alas I don't.

27. They are obscene.
If there is such a thing as evil, they are the definition. While I do not believe that violence is usually a good answer to "conflict," I am sure that if they showed up in this area (upstate NY) and attempted to disrupt a funeral, they would be lucky to have the police escort them away uninjured.

They were in Buffalo, Albany and Plattsburgh last month!

See my previous post. We ran them out of Buffalo and I believe they did in Albany as well.

29. They reached rock bottom a LONG time ago!
There's no shock value to anything they do. Picekting Richardson's funeral is far from the worst they've done. So in a sense they've lost their power to make any sort of public statement and all they can do now is torment greiving families.

I can't think of anything they might do that would be any more shocking than what they have already done--picketing the Boy Scouts funerals, picketing 9/11 funerals, etc. And they cast a wide net by picketing both Falwell's and Hinkley's funerals, and they also despise and denigrate Billy Graham.
