On the History Channel Now: Was Lincoln GAY?
Talked about his friend whom he shared his bed with for four years. Said Lincoln was so heartbroken when his friend moved to Kentucky that Lincoln stayed in bed for a week.

I think it's great that a mainstream channel is tackling this subject.

Oh, and that sound you heard was a million republican heads exploding.

2. Lincoln was not gay.
And neither was he a pothead.

The customs and practices of the 1800's are so different from today. This is just foolishness and stirring shit up.

3. Half the shows on the History Channel....
Are CRAP. Show like Armageddon, and wacky UFO theories. The only good shows are Einstein, Universe, and Modern Marvels.

21. Agree, it's ridiculous to put 21st century practices
on those in the 19th century and think you can come up with a real conclusion. :eyes:

22. "foolishness and stirring shit up"
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 02:54 AM by Behind the Aegis
Really? How so?

Is being gay "bad?" If not, then why would you consider questioning if Lincoln was gay is "foolishness and stirring shit up?"

"The customs and practices of the 1800's are so different from today." Which of those "customs and practices" are "so different" as to change the nature of sexual orientation?

7. J. Edgar Hoover was not gay.
And neither was he a cross dresser.

The customs and practices of the 1950's are so different from today. This is just foolishness and stirring shit up.

5. Even if Lincoln DID ever get sexual with his friend, his intense and loving relationship with M.Todd
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 10:25 PM by smalll
pretty much proves he wasn't "GAY."

It's really beyond belief the way 21st century America looks at male homosexuality the way 19th century America looked at blackness -- along the lines of the "one drop rule." 7 white great-grandparents, and 1 black one? You're black! Ever had some kind of sex with a man? You're gay!

(Unlike women of course, who are all "bisexual" (that's a laugh and a half.) Anyone like to name any other culture in history where women were routinely bisexual? Meaning, any other culture without frat guys with cell phones that take pictures, Girls Gone Wild, sexting, and/or Youporn? Anyone? Anyone?)

6. People regularly shared beds back then.
Just two in the bed? What were they? Rich?

The bed sharing is no indication of anything.

The staying in bed? Maybe. Or maybe he caught a bad cold because it wasn't warm in there anymore.

19. It is possible that Lincoln was Gay. But we will never really know.
so to speculate on something that we will never know is fun but unsatisfying. Who knows, there may have been others for which this could be said to be possible.

24. If he was, so what? - and - "gay" then did not mean what it does today
.
.
.

and people were much more private/discreet about their sexual habits back then also

USA now has a black President - so what?

USA in the future will probably have a woman president,

or gawd(ess) forbid a "gay" one

and so on . .

SO WHAT!

if they serve the people that elected them responsibly,

what difference does it make?

Should be about 100 million Americans wanting to hang Bush and Cheney,

not whining about President Obama's problems dealing with the BFEE's leftovers

but Bush and Cheney and the PNAC gang are out of the cross-hairs now

Obama makes a flippant remark about bowling and the Special Olympics,

The USA electorate is again distracted by an insignificant happening,

while Wall Street rapes their economy,

and their War-Machine rapes the planet.

I think the USA is basically f*cked right up.

One flipped tit gets more attention frm the electorate than dying Iraqis under the USA's invasion/occupation

Unless the ELECTORATE changes their attitude,

even 100 Obamas can't save them . .

(sigh)

28. Do some reading about how things were during the 19th century
Men often slept in the same bed. The same "standards" of the 21st century doesn't apply to the 19th century. My God, the HISTORY Channel is the source? What they ran out of programs about UFO's, Ghosts and various monsters.
