Pope Benedict XVI: condoms make Aids crisis worse
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/vaticancityandholysee/5005357/Pope-Benedict-XVI-condoms-make-Aids-crisis-worse.html

While en route from Rome to his first stop, Cameroon, the Pope said that the condition was "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems."

:wtf:

47. Hi, Hippo_Tron.
Well, the real problem with my post is I can't tell a joke.

But it does seem as if most 5th or 6th graders or so could give the Pope some instruction on basic physiology.

That he is a lifelong celebate, ignored the pedophile problem saying it was an American phenomenon, headed the Inquisition, fought for Hitler and is a total dickhead about how real people live and contemptuous of their right to choose the quality of their life would expose his genuinely deficient ignorance and lack of compassion amazes me. Include papal infallibility -the biggest ha-ha of all- and you have a perfect storm of irrelevancy.

5. Economic models and common sense disagree with you, sir.
Just do us progressive Catholics a favorite and stay home. We'll get your fuzzy slippers on and find something on TVLand for you to watch. Maybe we can find you a cat to play with and hang out with. We progressive Catholics are going to head out and start dealing with the world's problems in a practical way that doesn't interfere with our faith. We'll call you to let you know how things are going and if we need any heavy-hitting theological decision made.

shared values and beliefs (not necessarily religious) would go a much longer way than my ability to make her laugh or her ability to keep me entertained with witty conversation.

External beauty is nice, but in 20 years it's going to fade (though that's fairly common sense).

Stuff like that.

Oh, and don't be afraid to date outside the faith. As things start to get serious, religious issues will tend to sort themselves out, although sometimes you have to apply some effort to strike a compromise or understanding (this bit has helped a lot with the current girlfriend).

The Holy Spirit descending on Pope Gregory I, by Carlo Saraceni, circa 1610, Rome.
Catholicism portal

Papal infallibility is the dogma in Catholic theology that, by action of the Holy Spirit, the Pope is preserved from even the possibility of error<1> when he solemnly declares or promulgates to the Church a dogmatic teaching on faith or morals as being contained in divine revelation, or at least being intimately connected to divine revelation. It is also taught that the Holy Spirit works in the body of the Church, as sensus fidei, to ensure that dogmatic teachings proclaimed to be infallible will be received by all Catholics. This dogma, however, does not state that the Pope cannot commit sin in his own personal life.

This doctrine was defined dogmatically in the First Vatican Council of 1870. According to Catholic theology, there are several concepts important to the understanding of infallible, divine revelation: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Sacred Magisterium. The infallible teachings of the pope are part of the Sacred Magisterium, which also consists of ecumenical councils and the "ordinary and universal magisterium". In Catholic theology, papal infallibility is one of the channels of the infallibility of the Church. The infallible teachings of the pope must be based on, or at least not contradict, Sacred Tradition or Sacred Scripture. Papal infallibility does not signify that the pope is impeccable, i.e., that he is specially exempt from liability to sin.

In practice, popes seldom use their power of infallibility, but rely on the notion that the Church allows the office of the pope to be the ruling agent in deciding what will be accepted as formal beliefs in the church."<2> Since the solemn declaration of Papal Infallibility by Vatican I on July 18, 1870, this power has been used only once ex cathedra: in 1950 when Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary as being an article of faith for Roman Catholics. Prior to the solemn definition of 1870, Pope Pius IX, with the support of the overwhelming majority of Roman Catholic bishops, had proclaimed Immaculate Conception an ex cathedra dogma in December 1854.

34. I'm kind of surprised Wiki has such a decent article on
such a misunderstood topic.

Another Catholic fun fact: any proclamations made at an ecumenical council are considered infallible. Also, it is possible for a teaching to be infallible if every bishop in the world simultaneously promulgates it, although this has never happened.

I don't really care what your opinion of my religion is. I'm just a stickler for getting things right. :p

So the day he speaks ex cathedra and uses whatever little formula it is (I used to know it. Forgot it long ago.) and states "Condoms are evil" then your statement will be correct.

52. I think it's a mixed bag myself...
...on the one hand, you've got dogmas ranging from the amusing to the asinine to the destructively erroneous (as evidenced by Mr. Really Large Hat above)...on the other hand you've got (in many parishes at least) a strong sense of social justice, and some of the finest art, architecture and music mankind has ever created. It's a mindboggling jumble of paradoxes...on some levels I am aghast, and on others I am amazed. It almost seems to embody both Mankind's Greatest Screwups and Mankind's Greatest Hits all rolled together...I must confess I find the whole thing fascinating. Incidentally, the multichannel Super Audio CD of a Mass composed by the French composer Charles-Marie Widor recorded at St. Sulpice Church in Paris is one of the most breathtakingly-sublime classical recordings I've ever purchased. Freaking gorgeous music.

But saying it is making things worse is a sin imho. Say 2 people are going to have sex, and the choice isn't abstinence or birth control. Is it really worse to get aids than to wear a damn condom?
