HUGHSON — After months of gathering golf gear to send to military troops, Modesto's Bob Davidson finally saw the shipment depart Thursday for the Middle East.

At the behest of his son who served in the Army in Iraq, Davidson last fall began collecting clubs, tees, balls and other equipment — 21,000 pounds of it at the final count — in an effort he dubbed "Operation Driving Range."

The Bee first reported his campaign in September, and a Sacramento-area television station picked up on the story as well.

3. You really need emergency orange golf balls to "go with." The white ones disappear. nt

4. Not a golfer, Don?
Our golf league and the course employees collected golf gear and shipped it over to a league member who was serving in Iraq.He used it to set up a target golf course that they could use in down times. He sent us all pictures and it sure looked like they were enjoying golf in the desert. He said it was a great way to break up the boredom.

And, per your suggestion, we probably should collect old surf boards and boogie boards if we do have our military serving on a nice beach some day.
