My Dem sister lives in TX and most of her friends and associates are repubs. Her friends are in quite a tizzy over "illegal immigrants" (aka Mexicans)and one of them sent out an e-mail this week to the entire community with this attached Lou Dobbs video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YzJtMTAMuQThe email said:
PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE-then call your representative immediately-this can't happen.
First and foremost if CNN is airing this and they are upset by this proposal you know it is bad. Plus our so called President does not have America anywhere in his mind. My sister's response (she sent it reply to all):
I agree, we all need to write our congressmen and women and make sure immigration reform that values the law and does not reward illegal immigrant lawbreakers is enacted. But we need to know ALL the facts when we write those letters, such as:
This Lou Dobbs CNN report was aired on May 23, 2007 after House Minority Leader, John Boehner said the following in a speech at a reception for the Republican Rapid Responders; "I promised the President today that I would not say anything bad about this piece of shit bill...." For those who check the dates, the President was George W. Bush, and the amnesty bill in question was one he supported and hoped to sign into law.
Also in May of 2007, other senior Republicans said that the chances of the bill passing are "50/50" in the House and that the White House would spend its time lobbying Democrats, rather than Republicans, to achieve a majority. Again, for fact and date checkers, that White House would be the Bush Administration.
The bill was drafted by Senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy and was supported by President George W. Bush.
The bill was defeated in June of 2007.
In fact, in June of 2008, The McCain campaign said after a speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials that Obama had actually been an impediment to the carefully crafted immigration compromise.
“Barack Obama voted for five ‘poison pill’ amendments designed by special interests to kill the immigration reform deal,” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.
Again, in September 2008, McCain ran this ad in Colorado.
English-language translation of the 30-second commercial, "Which Side Are They On?" says:
Announcer: Obama and his congressional allies say they are on the side of immigrants. But are they?
The press reports that their efforts were "poison pills" that made immigration reform fail.
The result:
No guest worker program.
No path to citizenship.
No secure borders.
No reform.
Is that being on our side?
Obama and his congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead.
McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.
Announcer: Paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee. Approved by McCain-Palin 2008.
This ad was in Spanish and was aired on Latino airwaves. When it asks "Is that being on our side?" the side is that of spanish speaking immigrants.
Then Senator, and now President, Obama did not, and does not support the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill Lou Dobbs laid out for us in the attached video clip, and according to Senator McCain Senator Obama was instrumental in killing the amnesty bill.
Illegal immigrant amnesty is opposed by 47% of Republicans, 51% of Democrats, and 46% of those not affiliated with either major party according to a Rasmussen Report Poll conducted after the introduction of McCain-Kennedy Immigration bill. I am confident the numbers are higher in the economic climate of 2009.
So, by all means, let us keep the pressure on all elected officials about Immigration reform. Let us write as informed members of the people who put them in office...and who can put them out.
And be thankful that John McCain no longer has the political capital to get his bill re-evaluated.My sister and I have laughed and laughed over this for the last couple of days - her repub friends were up in arms over something McCain was for and Obama was against! And the so-called President that "does not have America anywhere in his mind" was Bush!
We also loved the comment "First and foremost if CNN is airing this and they are upset by this proposal you know it is bad."
Gotta love them republicans - they do keep us laughing.
