I liken their marginalization as the process of distillation. First to go is the good stuff- alcohol, then water, finally all you are left with is the gooey crap at the bottom of the still. And as the Republican party gets smaller, it gets more concentrated with the crazies, which naturally causes anyone with a shred of sanity to question the direction their party has taken and sooner or later leave.

What the Democrats have to do is to avoid "refilling the still"- driving a big chunk of voters back over there, diluting the crazies enough to become a "reasonable" party.
