Can there be a commune without a religious whack job?
Do communes still exist? If so, can there be a communal Utopian living organization in this system that doesn't rely on a religion or a spiritual whacko of some variety? The Utopian societies never survived, but has there been further study or experiment with it?

1. They are called communities now and there is a website
www.ic.org

They have a communities directory that is the size of a phone book. Some are religiously based, many are not. Some are more cohousing oriented, most are not. Some are polyamorous, most are not.

I've been a communitarian for most of the last two decades and I'm poly so I tend to go into groups where that is the focus, but I've considered going on walkabout and visiting some of the older ones, like The Farm.

Check it out. It's a thriving community.

2. Utopian communalism is got dropping out of society not changing it, so it makes sense they'd
be religious. But there are non-religious ones. Behaviorist BF Skinner's Walden 2 and the actual communities build from that are an example. I think behaviorism is unmitigated insanity, but that's just me.

6. Rainbow Families Alpha Farm
In Deadwood OR, about 5 miles from me. There are a lot of communes that have nothing to do with religion.

9. Mad Brook Farm in Vermont
Definitely no religion there. Started in 1968, and still going, but it's not like anyone can join. Mostly populated by artists and dancers.
