Missouri man charged in shooting of 29 cattle

MACON, Mo. | A northern Missouri man has been charged with shooting to death 26 cattle in Macon County.

A criminal complaint was filed Monday against Larry C. McFarland. The 52-year-old Novinger man is charged with one count each of first-degree property damage and armed criminal action.

Macon County Sheriff Robert Dawson says 29 cattle were shot Jan. 12 in the northwest part of the county. Three survived.

The warrant was sent to the Adair County Sheriff's Office to be served on McFarland who is in custody on other charges.

1. What a psycho! My first guess, from the large number, was that he was shooting

his own cattle that he couldn't afford to keep. However, it sounds like he just went out shooting at someone else's livestock. A bit odd that it's just one count - I'd think it should be 29, plus some animal cruelty charges for the wounded...

I wonder if he felt threatened by the cattle. Did they try to carjack him?
