This is what we're up against. Can you imagine if someone held up a sign like that about any other minority group in public. It just wouldn't be tolerated -- but this is considered just "expressing your religious convictions."

People do need to know what gays are up against. It is very ugly, and is not just the battle over semantics that the press is reporting. Prop 8 is evil. It fosters hate crimes in addition to creating second-class citizens. Both do not belong in a country that calls itself the land of the free.

I love when the news goes back every year or so and finds the people who held signs and swore at Vivian Malone. The people always sheepishly have to say they were wrong, they have learned, etc. etc. etc. I wonder how many of them have changed and how many just have to lie because it is no longer culturally acceptable to spew that particular form of hate.

Mein Kamph is illegal here too. So is anything related to the Nazis, so I have to illegally smuggle in a nazi knife my granddad lifted off of an officer he killed because the swastika is considered "hate speech".

I buy into the whole fire in the theater argument, saying something that puts others lives in imminent danger is illegal. So should a sign saying "kill gays" or "kill muslims" etc be illegal. I could by the argument. These kinds of words are illegal in France already. However I think people have the right to express their stupidity so saying "i hate Jews" or "I hate niggers" while being sickening is not in citation to kill so I think it should be considered free speech. Another example is advocating crime, illegal here in France for drug crimes. The EU says we can advocate crime, ie using drugs as free speech like in the USA but the French govt. takes advantage of most people not realizing that they have more EU rights than French rights. at any rate, where should the legal illegal line be drawn? Saying a murderer is a hero seems to advocate murder. Should advocating murder in general be illegal, just murder as part of hate crime? or is it protected free speech?

imo, the "fire in a crowded theater" meme is one of the most misunderstood around (on both sides of the political aisle).

it's pretty sad, actually.

there is not even a QUESTION (ask any constitutional law scholar) that such signs are 100% protected free speech.

in the USA (as opposed to canada, etc.), free speech means such hate speech is 100% legal.

period.

accepting that doesn't mean accepting the speech itself, any more than accepting the fact that mass murderers have the right to counsel, and a fair trial, means you accept mass murderers.
