Connecticut Catholic Conference 'Florists Need Protection'
At what point do people recognize that the religious debate over gay marriage is the dumbest controversy in American history? At times, it seems like they are intentionally validating Bill Maher and his latest offering - Religulous.

This from the Harford Courant:

Concerned that the state's new same-sex marriage law would infringe on religious liberties, the Connecticut Catholic Conference today proposed some broad exemptions which it believes are necessary to protect those rights.

The law does not require Catholic priests -- or any other clergy member -- to preside over same-sex weddings.

However, the church is seeking additional exemptions. For instance, it wants to ensure that a florist opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds not be forced to sell flowers to a same-sex couple.

The complete story is here.

A reminder that not all domestic Mullahs are evangelicals. I am trying to get my head around the pathology that would lead someone to even think about gay marriage with such detailed intolerance. What form of crackpottery makes people this obsessed over such nonsense given the current condition of the US?

1. They'll never recognize it. Telling stupid people they're stupid pretty much never works.

2. And what about the peoples who sell wedding cakes ?

Would a baker opposed to gay marriage on religious grounds not be forced

to sell wedding cakes to a same-sex couple too ? It's getting more weird

than the weirdest Monty Python sketch ever made.

But without the funny parts. :(

3. The Florist thing is pretty funny
They'll need to exempt hairdressers too.

Seriously though. Around here the Catholic Bishop of St Petersburg (or Pinellas I'm not sure which) was all about supporting Amendment 2. This is a man (and I use the term loosely) who not too long ago had been accused of sexual harassment as well as lavishing gifts upon a male parishioner who was also an employee and who apparently didn't appreciate his employer parading nude around his hotel room on command travel gigs. This is a man, who despite his vow of poverty lives in a four bedroom waterfront pool home with dock that is owned by the cathedral. This is a man who was involved in the priest scandal coverups.

6. I want exemptions, too....
I don't want to deal with bigoted creeps who dress themselves in holy garments and think that they are better than me.
I don't want to serve politicians who see nothing wrong with continuing the rape the planet.
I don't want to help people who see a difference between their dog and the cow that was just killed for their dinner.

But will I ever get them? Not likely. So suffer. Lots.

7. Will that restriction also apply to businesses that are owned and run by gays?
Will they have the right not to do business with straights? Or for that matter with RC's?

8. The burden of righteousness
It seems to start in childhood, ie that being a good person is a handicap in dealing with bad people. Homophobes know, it's part of their calculation, that they can do things to us that we will not do to them. Their advantage is that they can direct their hate at all gay people, indiscriminately, while we have the burden of having to sort the bad straight people, or the bad religious people, from the good ones. That's what's so sweet about the LDS church's activities- we don't have to sort out the Mormons or worry about accusing the wrong ones because the level of complicity in that organization is much much higher.
