It is very, very long, but quite a few of us here at DU (and our posts!) are replayed. If others have already seen this, apologies...but is a pretty interesting read.

19. I'm glad to see the Wikipedia link preserves it
I added the Wikipedia link after seeing the author's original post.

The problem with DU forum posts, as this illustrates, is that there's so much traffic here that a new post vanishes from sight within a day. Adding information to appropriate Wikipedia articles is a good way to make sure it's available to people reading about that subject.

How many people are skimming through looking to see if they were quoted? :)

This is rather interesting. I'm going to have to print it and give it a good read.

12. I'm one of the ones 'studied' ... and my occasional penchant for the grotesque and scatological.
 I suppose the small amount of 'pride' I take in that demonstrates a somewhat pervertedp/b] value system.

about how people here take a particular pride in trying to outdo each other with vulgarities...

Sometimes when I'm having a crappy day, I come here and read some threads that just totally crack me up

My own value system, such as it is, was severely twisted years ago...

21. Author: Freepers waiting for "good tyrant" on horseback.
"The preoccupation of Freepers with authenticity, the orientation toward the
powerful, and the comingling of the religious and the political offer a picture of a group
that is perpetually “waiting” for “some eventual apocalyptic man on horseback who will
come to make ‘tyranny’ and ‘good tyranny’ synonymous.”

26. Reading it now - interesting to note some changes in FR since the sample period
(which was Jan 2008). Back then, you could arguably say FR and DU found themselves as sort of mirror images - with a Republican president and Democratic Congress, each site had someone nominally on their 'side', but that wasn't trusted that much by a significant proportion of them (hence 'RINO' and 'DINO' labels). Now that it's a Democratic president too, FR is falling apart, IMO, duer to paranoia. Points in the dissertation like:

"Like their adversaries at DU, Freepers have developed a culture that forbids the actual wishing of harm upon the other side."

seem out-of-date already. And when discussing this post on FR:

The idea of America has been doomed by your local government school. They are run by the socialists and have been turned into pinko breeding grounds. Their guiding principles are:

1) Political Correctness
2) Multiculturalism
3) Radical Environmentalism

Your children & grandchildren have been converted before your eyes. The majority of Americans under the age of 40 have been force fed the Kommie Kool Aid by your local government school.

Take back the schools to take back America.

Dr. boobooday (:D) says:

In fact, Toaster tank’s narrative approach was not representative of the tone of the majority of responses to the thread, and his message received no comment, approving or disapproving, from the other participants.

Toaster tank’s description of the problem is not necessarily incongruous within the community, but his use of the grotesque frame to construct his narrative and associate it with the victory of McCain was extreme enough perhaps to discourage those who would likely agree with his sentiments in a milder form.

but, these days, it seems posts on FR like that normally get "hell, yeah!"s as replies, and people expand on it.

 It could just be that those kind of posts have leapt out at me on the few occasions I visit there (or they're linked to from here). That's the advantage of a doctoral dissertation, of course - she analysed every thread within a certain time period, to get a more accurate sample.
