Fired and out of a job, all because they spoke to a union. That's what nearly 2 dozen former workers with AJ's Fine Foods, a Valley grocery chain, claim happened to them. However, company officials said the firings were justified.

On Saturday, the former employees protested outside the store in Paradise Valley with signs. They said AJ's Fine Foods fired them unfairly.

"These are not bad employees. They're not people who didn't give good customer service. We were exemplary employees," said Julia Bishop, who was among those fired.

At issue they said are union contracts they want. Luis Espinosa, with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, said the store is retaliating against the workers for talking with them.

"The company's just trying to chill the workers who were standing to get a contract," Espinosa said.
