Booklovers: What I just learned thanks to Omaha Steve
Omaha, I hope it's okay to pass this along, but it is really important news for those of us who love to buy books online. I have to confess I am a book addict. Not a week goes by that I don't order books.

What I learned from OS: Powell books is the only unionized bookstore.

In the future, I'm going to order from Powell's if at all possible.

This seems important enough to pass along.

Peace

1. Omaha Steve gets my vote as poster of the year. I have learned more about Labor and Unions....
from his posts than all the civics classes I ever took.

7. Me too. I've come to depend upon his posts for any Labor question I might have!
I've even directed my high-schooler to search DU for his writings when a question for school has come up.
So cheers to you, Omaha Steve, and THANKS! :toast:

that taught me something I had no clue about.

The guy is amazing.

2. Wow! It was already the 2nd best bookstore in the country...
That might be cool enough to make it #1.

3. Powells is my online bookstore of choice, and every time I order I include a note thanking them for
being union. If you use the union's portal, they get a cut of your order, too:

Use union affiliation to increase sales. Hey, I'll do it.

8. .....And after you are done reading those books from Powell's.....
you can either donate them to your local library, or swap them at Paperbackswap.com, my FAVORITE free book source.

9. Omaha Steve ROCKS! He's one of my favorite posters. I just ordered an out-of-print book
from Powells a while back - got here post haste and in excellent condition. I'll definitely order from them again.

Cheers to Powells and Omaha Steve!

need a giant store. Independents if you want to help small business and try to buy local. None can compete with the breadth of Powells, but don't everyone rush off to Powells. Please find out where your locals are. Bookstores, both used and new, are closing down fast, partly because of giant corporations.. Help smaller ones stay in business. And when you're getting rid of books - see if you can sell some to them and donate the remainder. Make sense?

17. Thank you for bringing this up, peacetalksforall. I live in a university town where

independent bookstores should thrive--or so you would think. But, they don't. Used book stores and specialty book stores tend to last, but independent plain vanilla bookstores do not.

Given that we have a Waldenbooks, Borders, Barnes & Noble within a three-mile radius of downtown it's not too hard to understand.

The last independent bookstore tried to compete and was pretty good on price, but they just couldn't hang with the big dogs.

We do not have a Powell's in our neck of the woods, but I have read that the only other union-friendly bookseller is Barnes & Noble, so that's where I shop.

:-(

Imagine a 3-story bookstore that takes up a whole city block.

I'm so very lucky enough to live in a place like Portland, but to have Powell's so near is more than I could ask for.

25. Thank you for the info.
I have been trying to not use Amazon links for books--I've been using Barnes & Noble instead.

I think I'll be using Powell's from now on.

26. Does Powells sell music?
Edited on Mon Mar-09-09 02:35 AM by strategery blunder
I was planning a purchase of a rare soundtrack, about a month from now, that iTunes does not have (as of last I looked), but that Borders has for order online. If Powells sells it, I'd be happy to give them my business instead.

27. Begin a Google search with "Powell's"
(not powell, not powells) and any books which match your search will show up as links to Powell's. Otherwise, by default, you will get lots of links to Amazon books.
