5 Reportedly Shot At Ill. Church
5 Reportedly Shot At Ill. Church
Gunman In Custody

Five people, including a church pastor, were reportedly shot inside an Illinois church during Sunday morning service.

KMOV-TV in St. Louis, Mo., said a gunman apparently stepped up onto the stage and opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Maryville.

The gunman was stabbed by parishioners who wrestled him to the ground, a dispatcher told CNN.

The most seriously injured people were taken by helicopter to a hospital, and the motive for the shooting is not yet known, police told CNN.

Maryville is about 10 miles east of St. Louis.

4. Nasty. My best hopes for the injured.
But 'stabbed by parishioners'????

Good GRIEF. It's time for me to find a hermit's cave somewhere, when the Sunday church crowd starts carrying weapons to services.

I have always maintained that people are dangerous, regardless of which man-made construct they follow-- be that religion, politics or philosophy.

25. I myself am too far from clever to absolutely state...
Some say politics is crazy. Others say religion is useless. Still others say philosophies are an unmeasurable dogma themselves. I myself am too far from clever to absolutely state which is right ans which is wrong. But I am sure there are many people who pretend to know...

Lots of people carry them. They are quite useful for weekend chores.

26. The point?
The point is that I find it alarming that so many people seem to wander around armed these days.

That's all.

I suspect we are light-years apart in our feelings about weapons, so I'll pass on a discussion if you don't mind. No offense intended.

Since it has happened before...that kind of thing

12. So sad
I hope no others die from this incident, and that the congregation and the pastor's family can eventually find peace--though that will be a tough row to hoe.

19. "Their fruits" might just be knives.
All joking aside, we drive past that exit on the highway whenever we travel down to see the in laws, and I swear there is a factory store at that exit for hunting knives. I asked Kevsand about it (after all, he is the one that grew up in that area) and after reflection he had to agree on the presence of the store.

It could be that they MAKE knives in that town! Dunno for sure, but they do have a store specializing in them, I think.

FWIW, when I first saw this headline I had a few seconds of abject terror, because my husband's family attends a large Baptist church in that area. Once I saw the name of the church my panic subsided.

Deepest sympathies to that community and all impacted by this.

As things come apart at the seams - people snap.

I just can't imagine going to church and having this happen. How sad.
