Geithner Alone: Top Two Treasury Nominees Pull Out
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/06/geithner-alone-top-two-tr_n_172436.html

Wall Street Journal:

Two candidates for top jobs at the Treasury have withdrawn their names from consideration, complicating efforts by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner to staff his department at a time of economic crisis, according to people familiar with the matter.

...

Across the administration, several potential candidates have been blocked by the Obama administration's tough rules about who it will hire. In addition, the White House increased the rigor of its vetting process after tax problems threatened Mr. Geithner's confirmation and scuttled that of former Sen. Tom Daschle.

It would be interesting to see what many of these potential candidates have on their records that prevented Geitner from hiring them. The Washington Post has said that Geithner has not hired any deputies yet. What is he waiting for?

1. You know the economy is in rough shape
when you can't even get people to take high paying, reasonably secure and prestigious treasury jobs. It's almost like they know the crap-storm is coming and don't want to get painted with any blame.

3. It makes me respect Geithner more.
He knows he is in a no-win position, but he is taking the position anyways.

It would be nice if he had some help, though.

4. It could well be that people are reluctant to board the TITANIC and try to repair her while underway
It's going to take some people with skill and confidence to do this work. If they withdrew their names, we don't know if they had "issues" (taxes, nannies, whatever the latest offense is) or they just didn't want to put up with the long hours, constant berating by the media, lower wages, and the bullshit.

I love the way the WSJ "insinuates" that these candidates withdrew because they were dirty, without evidence. They may simply have been lazy, and didn't want to work a fifteen hour day at a quarter of their usual pay (or less), and the "long vetting process" gave them time to actually think through the reality that the job would entail.

WTF is wrong with HUFFPO, quoting/linking to that Murdochian rag, anyway?

6. Until the same people who were part of the problem and kicked into the ocean
nothing will improve.

8. Maybe the word is out on the street (Wall Street) that if you.........
join this administration there will be no career on Wall St. You are toast.
