He is a "man" that gave us this election, he has devoted his life to us, the common man. With Dr. Dean we also get his wife a distinguished Dr. in her own right. I want a Country Dr. in charge, because I have confidence he will do the "right thing" for his patient.

1. Atul Gawande would be my top pick (writes for New Yorker). Deand would be good too though.

Who would you trust? I have no agenda here but if my Dr. was like him I'd be willing to trust him with my LIFE.

6. I'd rather Dean not, so he can keep pushing for better policies.
Edited on Fri Mar-06-09 12:35 AM by Occam Bandage
A non-policy job like Surgeon General is a waste of his abilities.

30. Ditto.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it would be practically insulting. If he actually wants it, then fine by me. If he actually wanted it, maybe that would mean he had plans to actually *do* something with it.

7. i don't think Dean wants to be Surgeon General
the HHS position is what he actually wanted and has real power to influence health care in america.

11. You are correct

The SG position is beneath someone who is a former Governor. It would be an insult if Obama were to offer it to him, especially since Dean wasn't even the first choice for such a lowly job. As if Obama hasn't spit in Dean's face enough!

10. He would be a terrific Surgeon General
He could draw attention to real health issues and not take political heat for it because that's the Surgeon General's job. He could also help sell the final health care plan. He's actually a perfect choice and would be politically brilliant for Obama too. He'd get a lot of loyalty from that selection.

22. Actually, that is NOT the SG's job. It really is not a policy position in that sense.
And it's not something Howard would be interested in.

23. Health issues are not "policy"
They're health issues and drawing attention to them is most certainly the Surgeon General's job.

16. Why isn't he? I don't understand that one.
He has his own constituency, he seems competent. Is it an issue of specific expertise, or is it an internal political issue?

18. Dr. Dean would be fabulous at anything he would at this point accept.
there are things at work that we don't know that keep him from getting a cabinet nomination or otherwise.
I bet they have nothing to do with Dr. Dean ability, it must be some pettiness or personality conflict.

To me Howard Dean walks on water.
A true gem of a capable ad proven Democratic leader.

piss away an unspecified number of years in a mostly ceremonial and meaningless position. I think the doctor has much better things to do with his time.

26. Where Howard would have done the most good was HHS
He is not interested in Surgeon General.

Since he didn't get HHS, he will do just what he said: work at a law firm part
time and the rest of the time "raise some hell" for causes he believes in. If
he raises enough hell on the bahalf of people least able to do it for themselves,
I'll bet Obama will in short order wish he had selected Howard for HHS, where at
Howard would have had to watch what he said as member of Obama's cabinet team.

All but the most open-minded and progressive Democrats (not to mention right
wing Republicans) have always been a little nervous when Howard spoke his mind
(the truth tends to do that to you if you aren't used to it).

Maybe he can be a terrific and trusted public spokesperson for
health care reform as SG.
