I support overturning Prop 8.
And I really, really hope the CA supreme court strikes it down.

Kick and/or recommend if you agree.

2. HARD kick
Edited on Thu Mar-05-09 01:15 PM by damonm
That thing is an abomination on several levels. To deny gays & lesbians marriage rights is a direct violation of the 14th Amendment, and makes a mockery of Equal Protection. To do so on the basis of religion violates the separation of church & state. And to make fundamental rights subject to majority vote... :scared:
Even if I weren't particularly supportive of Gay Rights, this thing would have to go because it sets a HORRID precedent for everybody. When does Freedom of Religion become subject to majority vote? Freedom of Speech? Freedom of Assembly? Right to a fair trial? Miranda Rights?
This is something that EVERYBODY should be against - YOUR rights could easily be next, if the political winds shift the wrong way...

5th rec - off to the Greatest with you!

3. Another kick, and as an aside, FUCK NPR for using the term
"witch-hunt", to describe the effort identifying those who contributed to the "Yes on Prop 8" campaign!

5. It's not a witch hunt
it's a public fucking record. If you don't want your name made public, don't donate.

I wish they had published the names of everyone who signed the petitions to put it on the ballot in the first place.

People have to take responsibility for their actions.

Period

15. If people truly stood by their beliefs, then it wouldn't bother them
that it's public record.

22. No argument.
This is EXACTLY what Madison warned about in the Federalist Papers - the tyranny of the majority, or, as he and Thomas Paine called it, KING MOB.

16. No it's
not. Almost everyone who voted in favor of Prop H8 and who was interviewed by our local paper backed their position with gross misinformation. They were incredibly ill-informed -- whether through gullibility, stupidity, or laziness. They all said that they were in favor of it because of one of the following:

If they didn't vote for it, gay sex would be taught in kindergarten

Their priest or minister could be put in jail for not performing same-sex marriage

Their church could be sued or closed down for not performing same-sex marriage

And the winner is -- from a member of the Mormon Cult:

"If Prop 8 is defeated, it means every human and religious institution from the beginning of time will be illegal."

Now, if that isn't stupidity on a stick I don't know what it.

18. Let's amend the CA constitution to revoke the rights of left-handed people.
I mean, really, does anyone doubt the supremacy of right-handed people? Those lefties are pushing too hard and too fast -- they're alienating their right-handed allies, too. Mark my words, the backlash from the right-handers is coming and it won't be pretty.

(K&R)

20. I like the spin about the voters deciding. well, think about slavery
and civil rights. the voters then.... would they have voted for the end to slavery? how about civil rights? are people saying that we should go back to those things? i heard someone say about democracy that the supreme court can protect the minority. I sure hope they do. This crap is ridiculous!! Equal rights. Period!! Letting gay people get married won't affect my marriage one damned bit. I hope to hell the court does the right thing. Prop 8 is bs. it needs to GO!!

23. K&R, Prop 8 clearly won because a majority of people were largely ill-informed...

if the CA Supreme Court had not previously ruled that marriage was a Fundamental Right and that homosexuals were not a suspect classification, then the Yes on 8 side might have had a stronger position.
