Lilburn homeowner shoots, kills intruder at door
LILBURN, Ga. (AP) - Gwinnett County police say a homeowner shot and killed 1 of the intruders when two men kicked in his front door.

The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. Friday when the men knocked at the door and when no one answered, kicked it in.

Police spokeswoman Illana Spellman said the resident fired, striking and killing one in the doorway. She said the second man ran away and police using search dogs were unable to find the man.

1. Just like the ADT commercial
But this is a very odd story.

Someone knocked. The man inside didn't answer, but he was ready with a gun when they kicked the door in?

I wonder who he was waiting for.

There's something "off" about this one, don't you think?

2. Or the gun happened to be near by and when they kicked in the door she grabbed it
No, I don't think anything's "off" with the story.

5. That's not credible.........
It would have to have been in the owner's hand, ready to fire when the door got kicked in. No one moves that fast.

It's hardly the normal response to someone knocking at the door.

Now, what might have happened is that the owner peeked out and saw strangers at the door, got scared, got the gun, and hoped for the best.

That's the likeliest scenario, I think.

3. Could be anything.
... but one thing for sure, you kick someone's door in and you are asking to be shot.

7. I don't know.
If I lived in a very bad neighborhood, with a recent rash of push in robberies and had an unexpected knock at the door at an odd hour, then I could see at least having a gun in my hand until I saw who it was. He might have been going to look through the peephole when they kicked the door in. He might be a rival drug dealer. He might be a crazy Army Ranger with PTSD. Hard to say. The police didn't seem to find anything nefarious about the man involved at least initially, or if they did, they didn't make it public.

9. There has to be a lot more to the story....
The barebones outline of the story leaves a lot of questions. All the possibilities you laid out were quite credible. But, the way the story is told - albeit in the form of a Bulletin rather than an actual story - it's wanting.

How do you live in that house after that? Scary...................

13. He may have been carrying the gun in a holster when the door was kicked in.
The homeowner may have a concealed carry permit and a gun that he carries when he's out and about and also keeps on him when at home. Or if he doesn't have a permit, he may just carry the gun holstered at home. It's a good idea if he lives in the kind of neighborhood where burglars like to kick in doors.

20. That's another possiblity
What a hell of a world, where you have to carry a weapon while you're in your own home.

This is America.

How many gun deaths in all of Europe and Asia last year compared to the United States? I heard the numbers recently. The comparison was tragic.

16. And How Many Are Saved By Guns In Self-Defense Each Year?
Is it worth the tradeoff? My understanding that a gun owner is more likely to be harmed by his gun than helped, but i don't have the numbers.

17. For children it's incredibly rare, they aren't legally allowed to possess firearms.
Occasionally though a child will get an adults firearm and defend them self or someone else with that firearm. I don't know what would be involved in your trade off so I couldn't say.

32. Then you've changed your modus operandi.
It's like this thread this morning: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=208x16513
entitled "What are you reading the week of March 1, 2009?". It's in the Books: Fiction forum where it fits nicely even though it could have been posted to General Discussion where I am sure they read also. Hell, I bet they even read in the Guns forum.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

34. No, I don't think I'm wrong. (Although proving people wrong isn't shutting down open debate.)
These type of posts (and by you) were previously pretty much limited to the gun forum. Maybe the book forum would like debate also, so they should post in GD? As for me, I feel no obligation to engage in debate on a subject I would rather ignore. None of us are obligated to engage in debate on anything that does not interest us.
