Shine the light on HATE - state by state (UPDATED)
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 04:19 PM by TheBigotBasher
Last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that the number of hate groups operating in the USA had grown by 54% since 2000.

In 2008 926 hate groups were active compared to 602 groups documented in 2000.

Most hate groups still rely on fears of Latino immigration. It is therefore of no cincidence that there has been a 40% growth in hate crimes against Latinos between 2003 and 2007 according to FBI statistics.

Two added factors have been added to the spread of hate groups. The faltering economy and the elction of President Obama.

Following his election he received more threats than any previous President-Elect. Scores of racially charged incidents — beatings, effigy burnings, racist graffiti, threats and intimidation — were reported across the country after the election.

Extremists are also exploiting the economic crisis, spreading propaganda that blames minorities and immigrants for the subprime mortgage meltdown. The GOP has also been more than guilty of that, as have groups like PUMA and blogs from "Conservative Liberals" like NoQuarter. It is very easy to use hate to get a message across when times are hard.

Of the 926 hate groups, it should be noted 66 are from Texas and 346 are from the very Southern States.

(UPDATE)

Daily hate crime prosecutions. Good to get the scum.

1. Check your math on the very Southern States
Still, I'm proud to see Pennsylvania so heavily represented. :eyes:

Isn't it funny that Murtha took a lot of shit after referring to the bigotry still to be found in western PA? Looks like the numbers bear him out, at least according to this survey.

3. When I first read it, I was sure it said 3446
Either I'm going crazy, or you sneaked in an edit. Or both!

5. A bit of both
The 3466 number was there as a typo (3466 is more than the total). So my bag sort of.

6. Quite scary to see that the Klan is actually operational down there
I thought that they were banned. 36 Hate groups in a tiny state.

It is quite scary that these groups are nationwide though.

9. Take heart
Those people are small bands of about 50-60 people, who are powerless meth addicts and more of a threat to themselves than others. Someone asked me if I was afraid Pres. Obama would be assassinated , and I said that I thought they would be more likely to shoot themselves in the foot than anyone else. I can;t believe that the Nationof Islam is active in state.

7. So that means that 580 are from "very Northern States"?
My best is that Texas has less per capita than California, PA, or NJ.

11. side by side with electoral votes
To get a sense of how the number of groups compares with the total population, I did a quick messy fill in of electoral votes - 50 electoral votes got a 50% fill, 50 hate groups got a 50% fill, hope that makes sense. Without that info, the number of hate groups by state didn't make much sense to me.

12. Good map
Although I think that the basis of the Southern Poverty Law Centre map is to draw attention to who and what these hate groups are, by State.

Can you tell me if Focus on the Family is included in Colorado's 15 hate groups? If not, it certainly should be.

The klan also has quite a presence in Colorado, wonder if they are operating under another name.

Again, thanks for the information.

21. The notions of "hate group" and "hate speech" are dangerous ones, I think.

Because once you've started defining people as "hate groups" or their views as "hate speech", you can start chipping away at political liberties and freedom of speech without feeling guilty about it.

There are plenty of much better, more informative terms - "groups promoting racism", "white supremacist groups", "anti-gay rights groups", "anti-immigration groups" and so on.

22. Hate is what they promote.
Edited on Sun Mar-01-09 07:17 PM by TheBigotBasher
And to be fair they are further defined into those categories.

I do agree with what you say though, as I think that the UK for example is becoming more and more illiberal in its attempt to rid itself hate groups which will only drive the bigots further underground, therefore posing more of a risk.
