Walton County, Fla, nut kills 2 Chilean exchange college students, wounds
3 of their friends because they look foreign. The nut is clearly mentally ill, but was inspired by the manatee, Hannity. He asked a neighbor if she was ready for the revolution. The right wing hate-mongering needs to stop. You can google the Panama City, Florida News Herald website or Walton County info. Just happened 2 days ago. Very tragic. This is the republic base: Nuts.

1. This comes on the heels of other hate crimes against Latinos
Question: what was in the story that makes you think Hannity was an inspiration?

19. They don't look like the latinos, but were having a big party
and talking/laughing in their native tongue. Flipped him out.

17. He asked a neighbor if she was ready for the revolution.
The manatee website revolution was just in the news. In addition to the right wing hatemongers like foxnooz, rush-the-drug-addicted-pedophile and the others.

3. Guess which political party the guy belongs to:
He was a volunteer at the Walton County Republican Headquarters during the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign in 2004.

"He volunteered the same time I did," said Pat Magee, a member of the Walton County Republican Executive Committee. "I was shocked. The person I knew would have never done anything bad to anyone."

Magee said Baker answered phones and did general office work during the campaign. Although she didn't remember much about his personal life, she said he had mentioned he was from Alabama and had attended Auburn University.

Jim Anders, another member of the Republican Executive Committee, said Baker was very active during the 2004 election but added that he was very eccentric. He said Baker traveled to Atlanta once a year to assist in some sort of music ministry there.

Baker did not volunteer during last year's election, but local Republicans said they began to receive disturbing e-mails from him about national political issues, said Anders.

"Dannie had some emotional problems, it seemed," said Anders, who added that that many e-mails were "radical" and "inappropriate."

6. He's being charged with murder?
I thought Florida passed one of those "I'm-scared-so-I-can-shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later" laws that allows anyone who feels like he or she is in mortal danger to just start blazing away with a firearm until they're not so scared anymore. Seems to me the guy has an airtight defense, and the authorities will have no choice but to release him.

In fact, I see a permanent guest slot on Fox & Friends in Mr. Walton's future.

I have a feeling he is going to be visiting whatever the current version of Mr. Sparky Florida is using fairly soon.

the party from outside, through a window. No excuse whatsoever.

Horrible tragedy but doubtful it has anything to do with race.

12. He is definatly a nutjob (Just look at his picture) but I am unclear why
how this is a crime of race. He fired the rifle into an occupied building where a party was going on. I just doubt that the motive was racial I think he was just fucking nuts... I mean look at the guy.

13. I can't find the picture of him - just the students. I read somewhere
that he asked another neighbor if they had renounced God and when the neighbor said no he said, good, those people should die or something. Religious nutjob maybe.

26. Chile is a European based country like Canada or United States
Many Americans visiting are surprised since they expect South Americans to look a certain way... (IE Central American)

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/ci.html

Ethnic groups: white and white-Amerindian 95.4%, Mapuche 4%, other indigenous groups 0.6% (2002 census)
Religions: Roman Catholic 70%, Evangelical 15.1%, Jehovah's Witness 1.1%, other Christian 1%, other 4.6%, none 8.3% (2002 census)
Languages: Spanish (official), Mapudungun, German, English

Saying someone from Chile appears foreign is like saying someone from Canada appears foriegn...

In the context of the attack it wasn't racially motivated as the victims were the same race as the attacker.

25. They were speaking Spanish. That made them three shades tanner in the
mind of the killer. I'm originally from Chile and most people don't think I'm Latina, because I don't have a Spanish surname and I'm white, until I open my mouth and speak Spanish. The shock is palpable to neighbors and co-workers who have had no idea until then.

28. There are communities of German settlers in the lake district in
southern Chile. They still speak German as well as Spanish. Of course they have intermarried with other Chileans and there are immigrants from eastern Europe and Great Britain as well since the nineteenth century as well, so you will run across northern European looking Chileans with Spanish names and who culturally and language wise are Chilean.

9. Walton County is where Rove has a beach house (Rosemary Beach).
Walton County, like the rest of the Florida panhandle and LA (lower Alabama), is very, very Republican. And I have always maintained that parts of the panhandle, away from the beaches, are very mean. But this sounds like the actions of a truly deranged person, not the result of a rational political ideology.

16. Hi Demo tex..Ever hear of the look out tower Devil's Head
here in Colorado? When we go to the cabin we like to hike up the mountain until the point were we can see Devil's Head tower from the top. It's really cool! You know they are aware of our campfires and burning, they might even know our names.(we're the only cabin for miles around)

They should put a cell tower up there. We can get a repeater for about 100.00 and have cell service but no one wants to spend the money. I think it's just because the family LIKES not having a phone in mountains.

Anyway, the tower is open to the public and I have never been there. I guess if you aren't in shape the climb up the stairs is torture!

22. This is just awful.
It hits home for me. My mom was a foreign exchange college student (from Brazil); that's why I'm here. Our President's father was a foreign exchange college student; that's why he's here. Whether it's a racial hate crime or not, it's definitely a xenophobic one--it's a hate crime against the whole ideal of international friendship and knowledge-sharing. Which makes it an even more explicit crime against peace itself than your garden-variety murder.
