for the next x-tian who says we are a *Christian* nation
here's a good link

http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/adams.htm

and a quote I particularly like;

"As the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen ... it is declared ... that no pretext arising from religious opinion shall ever product an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries....
"The United States is not a Christian nation any more than it is a Jewish or a Mohammedan nation."

8. Christianity was not the driving force for the colonies to revolt against the British.
My recollection was that it was all about paying taxes without having a say in their local government.

And before that when the colonies settled in America it was all about making money for European countries.

And the United States was not the United States until they decided to revolt.

12. And some of those colonies were founded by those leaving other colonies ...
because of religious persecution.

There never would have been a UNITED States had a religious ideology had to have been selected as its founding ethos. The last thing most of the Founders wanted was to create a religious nation, one where religion was sure to be the basis of civil war. Instead, they let slavery play that role.

11. Ah, going back to Adams this eve!
But he was just a president, so why listen to him? Besides, he was a Unitarian, so can't be trusted.
