Why Do Red States Object to the Stimulus? They Pig Out at the Federal Trough & Do Not Want to Share!
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 11:31 PM by McCamy Taylor
I. Author, Author!

The truism du jour among conservatives is that the text of Governor Bobby Jindal’s rebuttal of President’s Obama speech before Congress was better than his delivery. Since my cats have coughed up hairballs that were better than Jindal’s delivery, I can not argue with that. However, that does not make the text good. Or accurate.

Take this line, repeated in substance a couple of times.

Democratic leaders in Washington, they place their hope in the federal government. We place our hope in you, the American people.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/24/us/politics/24jindal-text.html?pagewanted=3&_r=1

This reminds me of a famous line from Tennessee Williams, uttered by a woman of dubious morality and confirmed insanity.

Blanche DuBois“I have always depended upon the kindness of strangers”
A Streetcar Named Desire

Gratuitous photo of Vivian Leigh, because who would you rather look at? Her or Bobby Jindal?

The same character said:

Blanche DuBois: “I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell truths. I tell what ought to be truth.”
A Streetcar Named Desire

Jindal’s speech was full of fictional content. That whole anecdote about Sheriff Harry Lee, a Democrat and a good friend of mine was the very epitome of a Cajun story—a tale which serves no purpose except to confuse the audience. Does this mean that it was written by someone channeling Tennessee Williams, as a joke on the Republican party? Or was it meant to conceal a secret?

II. Red States Have Always Depended Upon the Kindness of the American People

Red States pride themselves on keeping their taxes low. They suppress state and local taxes in order to encourage companies and rich folks to relocate to their states. They keep an unhealthy supply of low wage, under educated, uninsured (often undocumented) workers so that there are plenty of maids, nannies, lawn care workers. This also allows the businesses to keep costs down so CEOs have lots of cash to bribe state officials . The side effect is rampant poverty, lack of health insurance, reduced tax base which leads to poor performing schools and other social ills that accompany wealth disparity. They deal with the inevitable consequences of their broken business model, by taking more than their share from the federal government coffers.

That’s right. These self styled, conservative, pull themselves up by their boot strap, we don’t believe in big federal government Republicans rake in more federal dollars than they give back in taxes. They fine tune their social safety net to keep just enough people alive and breathing to fill their federally funded prisons and dig their federally funded roads and pad the payroll on any other pork they can bring home to help deal with the poverty problem that they have deliberately engineered---because there is money to be made in the misfortune of others.

Well, no wonder they are objecting so strenuously to the Stimulus Bill that is going to give some extra federal funds to the other states in this time of recession/Depression. The Red states have worked hard to socially engineer misery so that they can make profit off of it. They do not want to share their good thing with some Johnny-Come-Latelys who just accidentally developed a problem with rising unemployment and poverty.

Those Red states sure appreciate the kindness of the American people who give them all their hard earned tax money to help them out when they are in trouble---but don’t expect the same favor in return. The Republicans taketh---and they taketh.

It is always sort of sad when you realize that people who talk all high and mighty about their principles are just making up shit to justify old fashioned self interest. But that is what this “limited federal government” crap is about. A bunch of greedy Red states want to cut the federal government back down to a size where it is just big enough to keep giving handouts to Mississippi and Louisiana and Kentucky and a few non southern states like both Dakotas---

But don’t take my word for it.

III. Numbers Don’t Lie.

Examine these statistics from 2005, before we plunged into recession. The figures on the right show how much return states get on their tax investment. The higher the number, the more money the states are getting back from Washington.

http://www.nemw.org/taxburd.htm

In order, the states that get the biggest return on their investment are: Mississippi (gets a 100% return on its money!), New Mexico, Alaska, West Virginia, Louisiana, Virginia, Alabama, North Dakota, Kentucky, Texas (but they are swimming in oil money and have no state income tax and the people pay the lowest per capita tax in the nation!), South Dakota, Montana, Hawaii, Arkansas, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Missouri, Tennessee, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas----

Now compare this to how the states voted in 2004. Only Hawaii, Maine, Maryland voted for Kerry.

In 2008, only New Mexico, Virginia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina voted for Obama.

I don’t know about you, but this just does not seem to add up. Conservatives claim that Democrats are tax and spend liberals. They say that we bleed hard working Americans dry and give the money to Welfare Queens in the inner city of Chicago so that they can eat steak and drive Cadillacs. But Illinois only gets back ¾ of its investment from the feds. You hear that Mitch McConnell? Your state makes a 50% return on its investment and gives the country lung cancer, heart disease, stroke from its tobacco crop. Those diseases cost us billions of dollars. The suffering they cause can not be measured in numbers. However, McConnell will do his damnedest to make sure that the federal government pays his state to support its tobacco industry, because he is a conservative who does not believe in Big Government .

IV. One True Thing

Recently, some one wrote to the Fort Worth Star Telegram. He bragged about how many degrees he had then said that people’s vote should be proportional to how much tax they pay. Under his system, the Red states should have no say in how the country is run, since they owe a big debt to the Blue states. Ideally, they should shut up and let President Obama and the Congressional Democrats fix the mess which Bush and the Republican Congress created in their unbridled greed.

I can just picture the alarm on the face of Rush Limbaugh.

However, Jindal said We place our hope in you, the American people. Now, he may not have meant it. Nothing scares a Republican more than two or more people exercising their rights as citizens of a democracy. But he said it. Several times. On national television. He uttered a plea for help. And we all know that Louisiana, bastard child of the Republican party, cursed, scorned and left to die, needs help more than any other Red state.

On September 18, 2006, Pastor John Hagee — whose endorsement Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said this past Sunday he was “glad to have” — told NPR’s Terry Gross that “Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans.” “New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God,” Hagee said, because “there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.”

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/04/23/hagee-katrina-mccain/

The Republicans represent a small number of special interests, like bank CEOs and Dick Cheney, who think that it makes good business sense to take the money and run to Dubai Ports. They sucker some other special interests, like extreme religious groups and bigots into voting against their financial interests by promising that they will pass unconstitutional legislation which they never deliver. These extremists turn out to vote in unusually high numbers, and they are willing to break the law to disenfranchise Democrats. The rich spend a lot of money buying TV time and journalists to sway the opinion of “independents” who are not well informed. That is how Republicans win elections despite their low numbers.

The Democrats represent everyone else---you know, the American people. And luckily, Americans believe in helping out other Americans who are less fortunate than themselves. They understand that a strong economy depends upon a strong employed working class that has purchasing power and the ability to educate its children and prepare them for the future. That is why the majority of Americans voted for the Democrats in the last election

Blue state Democrats have no patience with Red state Republicans who say Give us the highway money so we can line the pockets of our brother-in-laws, but keep the unemployment money. We like the starving workers. They will help us build those roads for half the cost and let us pocket the rest.

Bad Red state Republicans. Stupid Red state Republicans. That is not what the stimulus is for. Your federal welfare for the rich is what got us into this mess. Your war in Iraq bled the coffers dry so that you could skim a few billion off the top for your companies---any economics major who presented an idea like that as a thesis would get an F. Go to the back of the class and let the people who actually make the wealth that makes this country strong take charge, the real hard working men and women of America.

Bobby Jindal said one true thing, even if he did not mean it. He can place his hope in the American people. We will help his state, even if he is a Republican. We will not let him sink into the ocean, because he spoke against Obama, the way that Rove let NOLA sink, because they held a Jazz Funeral for Democracy in January 2005.

The American people know that we all have to hang together or we will hang separately. And hanging together means offering the workers in Red states the same opportunities for education, health care, decent wages, decent work conditions that their Blue state counterparts already have. The result will be a sounder economy, with fewer states that have to drain the federal coffers to get by and more that pull their own weight. Which is supposed to be what conservatives are all about, right?

and a terrifically informative post.

Yup, creeps.

I think the reading and watching skills are not called into play by Jindal -- for a "response" to the Obama speech, there was nothing commenting on the Obama content.

Let's hope the Repugs keep up this level of inadequate communication.

And, on Katrina, Jindal seems to be the kind of governor who is NOT complaining that his state only got $2 million of the $6 million in promised FEMA aid (see http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3756347&mesg_id=3756347). So, he certainly seems to have played along with the former Prez's plan to let a formerely fine Democratic American city rot in hell.

5. The Confederacy has been reconstructed.
Enough already!
"Your war in Iraq bled the coffers dry so that you could skim a few billion off the top for your companies...." Actually they've been gouging the rest of the country for years.
One of the things the Confederate States do is keep re-electing the same people to Congress and the Senate. Consequently seniority places them in chairmanships of the committees that decide which legislation to pass. This gives them the advantage when it comes to doling out federal dollars.
We spend entirely too much on defense. Many of the major military bases are in confederate states, thus providing a massive jobs program. Witness the aircraft carrier built in Trent Lott's home town.
The Navy didn't want it, but it was built anyway.
Confederate propagandists aid and abet by spewing mythology in support of the big rip off. But if we don't spend untoward amounts of money on defense 19 guys with box cutters will bring this country to its knees. :sarcasm:
Thomas Carlyle said he couldn't understand the American Civil War as the South wanted to own its slaves and the North rented them by the hour.
Now the Confederate States are renting slaves just like the north, but they're paying a lot less per slave.
At least Henry Ford, fascist that he was, knew enough to pay his employees enough to afford what they were making. The rest of the auto industry followed Ford and the industrial revolution climaxed. With the auto industry teetering, our manufacturing base is on the verge of extinction. The Confederates and their well heeled propagandists are convincing their ill informed robots that saving the auto industry is a bad idea, ignoring the billions given to failed and corrupt bankers.
Why would the lowest paid continue to support their slave masters? The Republicans have convinced them to vote against their own best interests so as to restore something immoral. They exploit the worst fears and lowest instincts by appealing to those who are uneducated and easily manipulated.
It causes speculation as to the Confederacy's ultimate goal. Do they want to restore that traditional value, slavery?

6. Yes, that is why they tried to deny citizenship to U.S. born children of Mexican immigrant workers.
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 01:26 AM by McCamy Taylor
That was a Southern bill, designed to create a new slave class---permanent resident aliens whom some could argue would have no citizenship in Mexico and who certainly would have no ties to that country (i.e. they would not speak the language or know the culture) so they would have to live here but they would have no S.S. benefits, no unemployment, no Constitutional protections. Their children would be the same, and their children. It was supposed to be the new slavery system.

http://www.diggersrealm.com/mt/archives/000890.html

Nathan Deal, Republican Georgia dreamed this up.

Here is his info (he changed parties to be with Newt)

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/d000168/

Here is Sourcewatch:

http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Nathan_Deal

For those who know Georgia, his district in the north of the state (map here)

and includes Dalton whose mills and carpet factories rely on low paid labor, often immigrant nowadays. This means that Deal was doing the business interests in his district a real favor---and the citizen workers a real disservice---when he attempted to create a new generation of Latino slaves who would have no official country of residence and who would have to work for whatever the mill owners in North Georgia decided to pay them.

47. I must have it confused with other Lott programs
but Lott did get many other ships built in Pascagoula as a jobs project. Trent brought home the bacon to Mississippi.

From Springbored's Springboard
A lion of the Senate, Senator Trent Lott (R-Miss), retired today. He was a shipbuilder's friend, too...So what are the implications for the big naval shipbuilding giants? What will happen to the Northrop Grumman Corporation? What about the LPD-17? Northrop's hopes to build a DDG-1000?

We here at the Springboard caught Lott's retirement speech, and while we were impressed with his folksy statesmanship, we don't think he mentioned shipbuilding once.
Readers of this Blog know that Trent Lott helped Northrop Grumman a lot. Who else covered the Navy Secretary Winter/Trent Lott Cagematch? And here's some fun history, too. The love between the Senator and his hometown shipyard was mutual. According to the Atlantic Free Press:

9. I reject your reality and substitute my own made up one.
I'm imagining that's what Bobby Jindal would say.

But wait, my big fat Red State of Alabama isn't rejecting any money from the stimulus. Our governor has kept a low profile on this (thank god) and has already accounted for the stimulus package money in the state budget.

Having said that, I have to mention Senator Shelby from Alabama. He is one of the best at getting pork barrel dollars for Alabama for schools, hospitals and education...he just doesn't want any of the other states to have the same kind of stuff. And Alabama of course is one of the poorest states in the nation. You're right, low taxes and low thinking brings mfg jobs like Honda, Mercedes, etc. to Alabama with huge tax break incentives. The state of Alabama paid in essence $160,000 per job it got when Honda came. So yeah, those non-union workers cost a lot less (my ass).

16. i tend to think that the PEOPLE in the red states want the money.
See, the politicians have jobs (at least for now) and they don't have to worry about their mortgage, or their health insurance. so it doesn't hurt them one bit if they refuse the money. But regular folks who are lucky if they are treading water right now probably don't feel the same way. especially the unemployed. who was it who said that the unemployed didn't want to get a job. wtf is that all about. These guys are just so out of sync with their constituents right now.

If they want to save money, maybe they ought to forego the primo health insurance and live like the rest of us.... on a roulette wheel praying to god that we don't get hurt, or that our insurance doesn't go up.... AGAIN. I hope to god that the people in every state can see just how little their representatives care about them and their needs right now. When people are sinking in quicksand, they aren't going to care where that life preserver comes from as long as it comes.

21. The Dead Tree Theory
By Gail Collins:

Louisiana has gotten $130 billion in post-Katrina aid. How is it that the stars of the Republican austerity movement come from the states that suck up the most federal money? Taxpayers in New York send way more to Washington than they get back so more can go to places like Alaska and Louisiana. Which is fine, as long as we don’t have to hear their governors bragging about how the folks who elected them want to keep their tax money to themselves. Of course they do! That’s because they’re living off ours.

The Republicans can’t try to convince the country their ideas are better because of that intellectual bankruptcy problem. All they can do is make Barack Obama’s programs look feckless, plunging everyone into so much despair that by next summer the public will be ready to go live in caves and eat squirrel stew.

In response to the question, "Why do you think the Republicans attack you so much?", he said, and I'm paraphrasing :
Because if they let it be a question of whose ideas are better for the people, they will lose, and they know it. Their strategy is to convince their supporters that I am the problem. That way, they can dismiss whatever I say out of hand simply because I said it. That way they don't have to debate the issues, which is the whole point. Without divisive smear campaigns they'll have to have an honest debate, and that is the last thing they want.

(on edit) Another great post, MT.

Louisiana has 30% of the nation's fisheries, and a sizable chunk of it's oil and natural gas. Make no mistake, this whole nation is very interdependent. To be told by states of a different political persuasion that we owe them? That'll lose you every moderate in the state.

When a state accepts the stimulus money, is it required to disclose its own books? Is there a qualification benchmark attached to this money?

If so, I can see why some red states might not want the feds snooping around their books. As a matter of fact, I think the very idea might make a few folks just have to change underwear.

26. I think the Neo-Confederate faction of the South and the GOP
I think the Neo-Confederate faction of the South and the GOP have a real problem with Mr. Obama due to his race. The racists that I know are worried that Mr. Obama will give more to "the illegals, single mothers, homosexuals, and minorities" than white people.
It seems to be a constant and re-occouring theme. I have even heard some evangelicals speak along this line. Remember that Sara Palin supported Pat Buchannan in his presidential bid, and Buchannans co-chair, Larry Pratt (if i remember correctly) is a hard core survivalist / christian identity (google that sometime) racist. He even gave a christian identity speech during the waco siege and timothy mcviegh is alleged to have been in the audience.

The radical and racist religious right has taken over the GOP. The prominance of Limbaugh and Palin should point to that. A centrist GOP would have nothing to do with either whack-job.

I have to disagree about the characterization of Louisiana in several regards to provide a better understanding.

From Baton Rouge to the southern-most parishes, we have a wealth of industry that provide good jobs. In fact, our state provides a major portion of the nation's refinery & production of petroleum. We have the best schools in the state in my parish due in part to the industry tax revenues.

The poorest population, which depends on agricultural industries, lives north of Baton Rouge.

The city of New Orleans, once a thriving hubble of business, has gone downhill since the late '70s. Canal Street no longer has department stores like D.H. Holmes, Godchaux's, Maison Blanche, Krauss, & Rubenstein's, possibly due to the opening of a large shopping mall in a nearby city, Metairie.

Other businesses that once provided tax revenues to the city, such as Shell, located in the large building called "One Shell Square" near the Mississippi waterfront, relocated to Houston.

New Orleans has one of the largest & busiest ports in the world. It is the 5th-largest port in the United States based on volume of cargo handled, second-largest in the state after the Port of South Louisiana, and 12th-largest in the U.S. based on value of cargo. The Port of South Louisiana, also based in the New Orleans area, is the world's busiest in terms of bulk tonnage, and, when combined with the Port of New Orleans, it forms the 4th-largest port system in volume handled.

One of Mary Landrieu's most sought-after goals for Louisiana has been to get our state its equal share of the oil & gas (Louisiana's prime natural resouces) revenues that have been shared with the entire nation. Louisiana and other energy-producing states have tried for more than 50 years to get an equitable share of revenues produced from oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Even though the Gulf of Mexico produces 30 percent of U.S. domestic oil generating up to $7 billion in oil and gas revenues every year, the state received less than 1 percent of that money, or about $32 million in 2005.

The Blanche DuBois connotation was cute, but I believe our state has carried its load.

31. A 'Cajun story?' Is that anything like a 'Negro tale'?
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 06:52 PM by FreeCajun
Jindal's a right-wing idiot and I was happy to see him bomb. A lot of us down here shared a good laugh over the fool talking about Mardi Gras and throwing worthless trinkets to the Repugs, whining about volcano monitoring when Louisiana badly needs federal dollars to respond to hurricanes.

But seriously? A Cajun story? 'the very epitome of a Cajun story—a tale which serves no purpose except to confuse the audience' Are some of your best friends Cajun, so that makes it OK?

I get emails about once a month from some of the idle racists I have to work around and live around about the Obama's being 'another black family in government housing' or text messages about 'hunters needing to get together to keep a coon from getting in the White House.' You know, it's always 'all in good fun' and 'nobody really meant it like that.' Does that make it OK? I sure as hell don't think so, and I doubt most of you would either.

How do you justify phrases like this to yourself? You're pissed at Jindal? So what? So am I! He's signed some creationist drivel into law that is screwing up our already slip-shod science education, he's inflated the state budget with pay raises for his buddies while cutting health care for the poor, and panicked half the state for Gustav, a weak Category 2 hurricane while his budget allowed the power infrastructure to suffer ten times as much damage as it should have. None of that is a reason to invoke racist stereotypes when talking about him or the people who happen to live in the same state as him.

Despite the moron in the governor's mansion, there are a lot of Democrats down here, and the way this madman is wrecking our state to further his career, I won't be able to raise my own children where my ancestors have been born, chosen to live, and were buried for the past two hundred years. I cannot hope to express to you how that galls me. And now, I come on to a board supposedly made up of tolerant-minded people and see this kind of idle polemic, defaming the family who taught me my true blue values and others who I have grown up around and loved, my family and my ancestors? What the hell, people? What the hell?

37. Well said, FreeCajun!
Please read my response up above & tell me if I'm wrong.

Sheez...I looked up the OP's profile to see what state the poster was from & no information was offered. I'd like to look up what goods & commodities are provided by his/her state.

46. The United STATES of America.
Actually, just the southern ones. I know whereof I speak (and write). Bunch of self loathing hypocrites.

"Now I want you to tell me just one thing more. Why do you hate the South?"

"I don't hate it," Quentin said, quickly, at once, immediately; "I don't hate it," he said. I don't hate it he thought, panting in the cold air, the iron New England dark; I dont. I dont! I dont hate it! I dont hate it!

Absalom, Absalom William Faulkner

This

is why I will always distrust the south. Always.

39. The Answer Is WAY More Simple
It's because, unforunately, and for a myriad of reasons, the red states have a higher proportion of undereducated and selfish people.

That's not a knock on those states. The voting patterns make it a statistical fact.

42. Party above country.
Anyone with anything other than an R* must be unconditionally opposed no matter what.

*That includes even some R's who don't lock-step and march 100% of the time.
