Bernanke says, Go shopping, America! Everything is going to be great!
Guess he can always come back and say, "Oh, did I say 2010? I meant 2040, sorry about that."

This is a 40 year recovery, not a 6 or 7 month recovery.

"If actions taken by the administration, the Congress, and the Federal Reserve are successful in restoring some measure of financial stability -- and only if that is the case, in my view -- there is a reasonable prospect that the current recession will end in 2009 and that 2010 will be a year of recovery," he said.

2. Well, I'm spending in education so I can get a higher paying job (and do it well) so that
in turn I can continue to spend more.

Or that's how the theory goes...

3. Was he asked....
to define 'recovery'?

'Cause there's no going back to where we were, there was no 'there' there.

6. yeah... I've been wondering what people expect when they hear "recovery"
I'd settle for relative stability in the stock market and a sane flow of credit, an employment market where people can switch jobs relatively freely if they want/need to, and income levels at which we can provide for ourselves without going into debt while saving reasonable amounts for retirement. That sounds like more than enough to me--maybe that level of security is too much to ask from a recovery.

Certainly materially, people can't possibly go back to the patterns of consumption that were the norm just a year ago, when we were brainwashed by magazines and TLC programs to believe that spending $500 on a purse wasn't a nutty thing to do.

4. I just came from my shiny new (less than a yr old) Target. A lot of shelves
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 01:44 PM by Kahuna
were empty. I was in the store for an hour looking for stuff and walked out empty handed. Then I went to my recently (less than a yr) expanded and remodeled Home Depot.. I also walked out empty handed because the item I wanted wasn't in stock. There also were a lot of half filled shelves. I tried.
