Father Kills Wife, Son, Self - BELLE VALLEY, Ohio - Please be proactive to those with problems now.
The following is another story of a family dying from the hands of the father who had lost all hope of getting through this trying time in our country. I ask that if anyone knows a family that may be in danger of this happening to please offer some direction to a mental health professional in their State.

This is getting very unnerving and happening more and more. We just had a 58 year-old man kill himself and his 92 year-old father because of a lost job and foreclosure of his home. I can only hope someone will do the right thing before this happens in their circle of family and friends.

BELLE VALLEY, Ohio — An unemployed carpenter and construction worker killed his wife and son before fatally shooting himself Wednesday, the Noble County Sheriff's Office said.

Ted Bayly strangled his wife, Janice, and their 11-year-old son, Colton, with electrical cords, then called the sheriff's office to report the crimes before he shot himself, ONN's Denise Alex reported.

Ted Bayly told the dispatcher he was having financial problems.

........

We must offer help when we can. :grouphug:

2. I don't think deliberately strangling your family has anything to do with financial problems.
It would take a while and a lot of struggle to strangle someone--this dude was just a sicko. I continue to have no sympathy for people who murder and then blame "financial problems".

5. More from the story - Sounds to me the depression over the loss of work etc put him over the edge...
"A father who was depressed and couldn't find work, a mother whose hours were trimmed from her job, and their only child caught in the middle.

"I was in shock, I swear, this morning, for an hour this morning before it even hit me," Bayly's aunt told ONN.

Police are used to investigating murder suicides that most often occur between a wife and a husband, but say this case is particularly disturbing because 11-year-old Colton was also killed.

Authorities believe Colton witnessed what happened to his mother.

Noble County detectives said Ted Bayly strangled his wife in her sleep and then went after Colton."

7. I have no doubt he was suffering from a severe mental illness--

but you have to have a lot of rage to hold your own child down and watch him struggle and gasp for air--for a fairly long time. It's the method he chose that makes me think it wasn't just depression from bad finances--he was already sick in the head. Edit to add: my point is, if it's not one stressor that sets him off, it'll be another.

10. I agree there was probably some other stresses & this was the last straw.
Even more reason to be proactive in these situations. Also he could have been on some kind of medication or illegal drug that put him over the edge. There are a lot of them given out to people and then they loose their insurance and they may not be regulated. If you remember that wrestler that killed his family a year ago was on some kind of drug.

9. That was my first thought
A person in despair doesn't do something as calculated and time-consuming as strangle his victims. It's not like it looks in "The Godfather". Strangling someone takes a long time.

This one is tragic, but it has another whiff to it. I don't buy the 'financial problems" excuse.

That poor little boy, trying to fight off his father with a pocket knife. That's an image I'm gonna carry around for a while.................

To strangle an 11 year old? That poor boy!!!!! I will take your post as a reminder to watch out for those who seem hopeless and do my best to help them.

11. Of course not, but you're applying rational thought to a non-rational situation
In the eyes of that man, the world may have seemed so hopeless that he thought he was doing his family a favor by killing them.

14. I'd buy that a tad bit more...
if he shot them. But to strangle them, one after the other? That takes something more than hopelessness.

15. Gosh! I agree with you.
There's just an element of cruelty to this that makes me sick to my stomach. If the man had hung himself, I would think, "Well, maybe he didn't have access to a gun." But the man let his family suffer an excruciating death and then took the "easy" way out for himself.

8. I agree with you! I had a step-daughter who took her life & her 5 year-old son too...
and I have thought long and hard why she did it other then that she was mentally off balance. I had by the way reported her to Adult & Children Services a year before this and she had moved away and we had no interaction with her. The authorities told me they had found nothing wrong and her house was well kept so they could do nothing more. She did however go in and out of a mental institution for a few months but like I said after she moved away it went under the radar.

I think she killed the son to "punish" those that she felt had harmed her in some way and that could have been anyone as she was schizophrenic and heard voices. She just lost hope. These people are not in their "right" minds after all and we cannot understand because we have the rationale to do so. It is a terrible and frightening thing and it never leaves you for very long.

13. Things like this happen all the time in America...
no matter what the state of the economy. And in many such cases there is a history of domestic violence. (Not to minimize this particular story. It's a tragedy every time.)
