Liz Cheney scolds HRC, Pelosi, Obama, Hagel in snarky WP op-ed
Retreat Isn't an Option
By Liz Cheney
Tuesday, January 23, 2007; Page A17

Sen. Hillary Clinton declared this weekend, " I'm in to win." Anyone who has watched her remarkable trajectory can have no doubt that she'll do whatever it takes to win the presidency. I wish she felt the same way about the war.

In fairness, Clinton, with her proposal for arbitrary caps on troop levels and hemming and hawing about her vote for the war resolution, has company on both sides of the aisle. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is the only national Democrat showing any courage on this issue. We Republicans -- with help from senators such as Chuck Hagel -- seem ready to race the Democrats to the bottom.

I'd like to ask the politicians in both parties who are heading for the hills to stop and reflect on these basic facts:

· We are at war. America faces an existential threat. This is not, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi has claimed, a "situation to be solved." It would be nice if we could wake up tomorrow and say, as Sen. Barack Obama suggested at a Jan. 11 hearing, "Enough is enough." Wishing doesn't make it so. We will have to fight these terrorists to the death somewhere, sometime. We can't negotiate with them or "solve" their jihad. If we quit in Iraq now, we must get ready for a harder, longer, more deadly struggle later.

· Quitting helps the terrorists. Few politicians want to be known as spokesmen for retreat. Instead we hear such words as "redeployment," "drawdown" or "troop cap." Let's be clear: If we restrict the ability of our troops to fight and win this war, we help the terrorists. Don't take my word for it. Read the plans of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Ayman Zawahiri to drive America from Iraq, establish a base for al-Qaeda and spread jihad across the Middle East. The terrorists are counting on us to lose our will and retreat under pressure. We're in danger of proving them right.

· Beware the polls. In November the American people expressed serious concerns about Iraq (and about Republican corruption and scandals). They did not say that they want us to lose this war. They did not say that they want us to allow Iraq to become a base for al-Qaeda to conduct global terrorist operations. They did not say that they would rather we fight the terrorists here at home. Until you see a poll that asks those questions, don't use election results as an excuse to retreat....

(The writer is former principal deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs.)

1. Is there any neo-con article about Iraq..
..that doesn't mention the names Abu Musab al-Zarqawi or Ayman Zawahiri?

Are these the only boogeymen these braindeads can dredge up?

2. If Liz Cheney is under 42, she should be in the Army.
Since this is a war for existence and all, how can these people just sit around? Shouldn't they be on the way to the front to defend our very existence? Their lies, hypocrisy, and cowardice are limitless.

3. She doesn't know Bush/Cheney have already lost their misbegotten war ?
Don't use election results ??????? This from people who told us narrow election victories in suspect elections were sweeping mandates for whatever they wanted to do ?

5. Ms. cheney, no troop can win a war in the absence of leadership.
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 02:02 AM by caligirl
the best trained military in the world is desimated by decisions your husband made and bush made. Americans didn't expect the Republicans to loose the war with the finest troops around, as you have caused.

Surge May Bring Early Success

Military officials say violence will then increase sharply once insurgents learn U.S., Iraqi tactics.

folks expect this to be the sharpest upsurge in troop deaths you have seen to date. They plan to go aaround in smaller groups, say a platoon sized group. its nothing for the insurgents to outnumber a group that size far from any safe walled off compound for the troops to get to.
Igf the troops were in very large groups they would have a better chance of survival. If the tactic is to knock doors down in Bahgdad, the troops will be outnumbered and deaths will sky rocket.

Ms. cheney you can shit in one hand and want in the other and see which fills up first. Go to OCS and become a military policeman in Iraq and leave your family for a year or more.

7. Alright - I'm ready for Hillary to take the gloves off.
If there is one plus to a Clinton candidacy, it is the elimination of the need to pander to the right at this point. They'll always hate her and there is no changing their minds. Therefore, I think she's uniquely poised to respond to right-wing attacks like this without the need for mincing words.

11. Cheney credibility...ZERO.
Hey Liz--Fighting them "over there" doesn't mean we can keep them from coming "over here" to exact revenge for all of the death and destruction you and your father (and Holy Joe) have imposed on the Iraqi people. You see, Liz, they view US as the terrorists. Now what?

12. Quitting helps the terrorists? How about staying helps the terrorists?
Our presence and our abuses in Iraq are directly responsible for giving extreme Islam a foothold to spread through that country. And it has, like wildfire. "al Qaeda in Iraq" didn't exist in Iraq until after we failed to secure the country and the streets, until after the Shia militias began forming and taking over neighborhoods with their own violent extremist views, until after Abu Ghraib was reinvented in its old image by our military and CIA.

Your father and Bush** not only let this happen, they stole the matches to put to the tinderbox.

The Shia and Sunni radicals will now continue to fight for control of Iraq whether we're there or not. Consider that, Liz, and tell us: when are YOU and Bush**'s children going to go stand in the middle of this ideological war you all started? And do you think it will be over before YOUR precious children are of age to enlist?

And WTF are the plans for Afghanistan, which I note you -- like everyone else in this neocon maladministration -- utterly fail to mention now, apart from moving yet more troops from there to Iraq?? If fighting the "WOT" is so important, Liz, perhaps somebody should worry about the Taleban and oh yeah, bin Laden, remember him?

The only thing you can fling at others is shit, Liz, because you haven't an ounce of credibility. Go back to inciting another distracting war with Syria and Iran. That's about the only thing you people are good at: manufacturing death.

15. Aren't there like 500% MORE "card-carrying terrorists" since we invaded Iraq?
This illegal invasion and occupation has been the single
greatest recruitment tool in the history of anti-American
terrorism.

As it was intended to be.

14. Lynn Cheney is a war criminal too
She supported the attacks on the world trade center orchestrated by her husband
against the 'existential' thread of those buildings, so they could get on to more
existential threats like the french left bank until finally heading off to the
land of bad logic and big egotism.

Lynn Cheney, i hope you lose your fucking war, you ragshit bitch, go die there yourself, fucker.

This war is between you and your war criminal posse, and i hope you all lose, because you
are against justice, against the constitution, and against jesus christ.

You will lose, lynn, everything you stand for, mark my words.

18. To use her quote...
"In the words of Winston Churchill, we must deserve victory."

This is the problem. War is not a game. It is the last resort. We were sold this war through lies and deceit.

No honor.

Is she his daughter, or what relation is she?

'(The writer is former principal deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs.)'

Do I smell a teeny bit of nepotism here? She sounds totally unqualified for such a position. Ignorant and vicious.

"We are at war. America faces an existential threat. This is not, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi has claimed, a 'situation to be solved.'"

The threat is existential and cannot be solved, so, let's just keep doing what we've been doing (i.e. Stay the course)?

Ten tons of stupidity packed into one sentence, Ms. Cheney. Bravo!
