'Buy America' campaign rattles China
15 Feb 2009, 2243 hrs IST, TNN

BEIJING: China is rattled by the "buy America" call in the $789 stimulus package passed by the United States senate because it will severely hit Chinese exports.

The move has foreign policy dimensions because it might wipe out a lot of the trade surplus enjoyed by Beijing and effect China's ability to deal with the world.

The Xinhua news agency, which is the organ of the Communist Party of China, described the move to favour American goods as a "poison" that would hurt efforts to solve the financial crisis. The Xinhua editorial also hinted as possible trade disputes concerning the package between China and the US at the World Trade Organization.

"History and economics have told us, facing a global financial crisis, trade protectionism is not a solution, but a poison to the solution," the news agency said.
Official broadcaster CCTV roped in several experts, who criticised the buy-America move while reminding audiences that Beijing had avoided opting for a "Buy China" campaign.

6. Here's a deal for them:
We'll exempt Chinese products from the "buy American" clauses, and in exchange they completely end their currency peg *tomorrow*.

Deal?

8. They right about protectionism not helping in a world economic crisis.
But they really need to show some leadership in improving working conditions and wages in China

10. Please, please, please----Saying Buy American only Means
The Taxpayer money used for stimulus---used for stimulus
is not to be sent overseas to stimulate other countries.
This little pot of money is to be used at home in US.

China has required that every penny they spend on Infrastructure
and stimulus for their economy be spent in China only.

Why have a stimulus if we are going to continue to create
jobs in China. Tell China if we do not build up our workers
and their employment we cannot buy their stuff.

The Free Traders cannot hear or read??? This is not protectionism
it is protecting our sovreignty in developing our economy.

No one has said a word about closing markets in general
Taxpayers money for stimulus.

12. Good. Let's hope it does level the playing field a bit.
And while we're at it, maybe they'll clean up their act and stop poisoning us and our dogs with their shitty products. We've got enough shitty products right here at home!

14. I really really try to buy American
but it's very hard. So little is made here anymore. Particularly clothing. Just bought a down jacket from an iconic "All American" sounding company and the jacket was made in Bangladesh.
