YES!
Obama to lift ban on stem cell research soon
Sun Feb 15, 2009 3:30pm GMT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will soon issue an executive order lifting an eight-year ban embryonic stem cell research imposed by his predecessor, President George W. Bush, a senior adviser said on Sunday.

"We're going to be doing something on that soon, I think. The president is considering that right now," Obama adviser David Axelrod said on "Fox News Sunday."

In 2001, Bush limited federal funding for stem cell research only to human embryonic stem cell lines that already existed. It was a gesture to his conservative Christian supporters who regard embryonic stem cell research as destroying potential life, because the cells must be extracted from human embryos.

Embryonic stem cells are the most basic human cells which can develop into any type of cell in the body.

Scientists believe the research could eventually produce cures for a variety of diseases, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease and spinal cord injuries.

Obama vowed to reverse Bush's ban during his presidential campaign and in his inaugural address last month promised to return science to its proper place in the United States.

3. Remember that weird address Bush gave back in '01 from the Pig Ranch?
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 03:47 PM by stevedeshazer
It was in August 2001. Bush looked completely out of place at a desk in the Crawford "Western White House" vacation palace.

That's when I really knew he was just a nut in the pockets of the Radical Right.

because of this ban on ESC. I don't know if she will come back because wonderful opportunities outside of the U.S. have presented themselves. It is a huge loss for us, and I wonder how many other good scientist we lost during this reign of ignorance.

10. The argument against it was bullshit. One embryo.
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 04:06 PM by Gregorian
Just a single embryo can serve as the basis for many years of treatments.

As if life were important to them at all. Killing in the name of George was no problem.

Man this is some seriously good news.

Hey, it's like America is joining the world. What a novel concept.

18. I am sorry for your loss
diabetes runs in my family too, although we in my generation have been careful with our health in hopes of it skipping us (most of our relatives had 'adult onset' type)

I also gave you a heart and now realize it is the same one you already had! Sorry, I should have been paying attention.

19. I'll say it again , I love Obama
he just keeps moving ever so slowly to doing what is best for this country and the planet. He really is like you and me. I want to believe that so don't try and ruin it for me. I have faith in this man Big Time. Maybe one of the first times I have truly had faith in my life. Notice he keeps doing things that the big rotten media doesn't pick up on right away. Love him.

22. Thank GOD. It's about damn time. My baby sister has RA, and has already been through...
...three major joint replacement surgeries. Deals with unspeakable pain every day, not to mention the side effects of the drugs she's on.

It's another auto-immune (like MS), and I know they're hoping for some application with those. Time to get going on it.

32. while I am glad to see this change
the title on the article is completely misleading as there never was a ban on stem-cell research. This is just as disgusting as right-wing reporting word choice that ticks people off so much.
