The thing about Senator Burris refusing a bribe is all over the Chicago news.
The republicans are going to try to get his senate seat because he perjured himself in the hearings by not admitting that blago's brother wanted 10,000 dollars.
Like Burris or not, he's been accepted as being legally appointed. Even if he resigned, the new Governor would appoint his replacement. Next election is in 2010, come hell or high water.
7. Again, the fault lies with every Dem who voted for Blago
in the primary and in the general. If Eisendrath had won the primary, or Whitney (the Green) had won the general, we wouldn't be in this mess. It's time to throw out the machine!!!
10. did Burris really perjure himself? Was he directly asked if Blago's brother
wanted $$ or was he only asked if Blago asked him for anything? Granted, I think it is shady that he did not admit it upfront, if Burris only stated uder oath that Blago (himself) did not want anything for the seat then he did not perjure himself-just left out the detail about Blago's brother.
13. some lawyer must have been concerned about his answer
or he would not have presented a "supplemental" affidavit. I think it might be okay (meaning strictly speaking legal) but it sure looks bad, sounds bad, and will leave collateral damage. I bet he wouldn't have offered this "clarification" unless he had some inkling that the truth about the other end of the conversation might come out. Is this for Fitzgerald's inquiry? I seem to remember that Karl Rove submitted a clarification after it sure looked like he was caught in a lie to the Plame grand jury.
That's the way the law works. The whole reason Burris was in is because it was law, Blago had the legal right to name someone to the seat at the time. Quinn will have that same right. Let the GOP piss all over themselves about a special election if they want. Quinn has no known taint on his office, there's no reason he couldn't name a replacement.
15. It won't happen, at least not now, the Illinois legislature is a Dem majority
They know this seat is too important to lose. And to Repubs who bitch and moan over this, well we know DAMN WELL they'd do the same thing if the tables were turned...doesn't make it right but no one said politics is pure...
