(It KILLS me to say this) Thank you Senator Lieberman
His Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee passed out committee by 11 to 1 the DC Voting Rights Act.

http://www.washingtoninformer.com/wi-web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=661:senate-committee-approves-dc-voting-rights-act&catid=60:local&Itemid=149

It is likely to pass into law in this Congress. with actual bipartisan support.

The fly in the ointment? In order to get enough repub support, they had to give another congressional seat to Utah.

It appears the votes are there in bth the House and the Senate to get this one through this time.

Joe ..... thanks for not being your usual diskheaded self.

2. Think he's trying to save his soul? Atone for his sins?
Or just save face despite the backstabbing?

5. He's always been a very reliable vote, so long as he is not distracted with
thoughts of Israel, terrorism, or war. He's perhaps the biggest hawk in the Senate (his brazen support of McCain, and his tacit support of Bush, were almost entirely based on Iraq), but on anything else he's a decent member of the Dem caucus.

9. Why is his blinding support for Israel so strong?
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 06:12 PM by Taverner
Yes, I understand he's Jewish.

So am I.

So are a lot of people.

And most of us don't think a "destroy the perceived enemy" strategy is worthwhile, unlike the NeoCons and Likudniks.

11. I have no idea. I really don't know. And as much as
I appreciate his strong support for progressive domestic issues, I cannot generally support a Senator who repeatedly turns his back on both his party and his country, all for the sake of a foreign nation.

13. Thing is - he isn't acting in that foreign nation's interests
Unless the foreign nation you speak of is Saudi Arabia

Honestly - 8 years of the Bush Admin - how well has it served Israel? They've been fighting war after war under Bush. In wars, lots of people die. More and more countries in the Islamic Belt want to obliterate Israel.

I remember traveling through that belt in the 90's. Most people were tolerant of Israel. That is NOT the case today.

So is he really acting in Israel's interest? (well, unless that interest is suicide)

17. He's acting in a way that he, the Israeli government, and a significant
plurality of both Israelis and Americans believe is in the interest of Israel. I agree with you that Israel's strategy in the past decade has been counterproductive, but unfortunately a peaceful two-state solution seems less and less a realistic possibility. I don't know how Israel might be coerced, goaded, or led towards a healthier mindset; as such I wish we'd just get out and stay out.

19. Personally I like the idea of cutting off cash
They do rely on our defense dollars

Also - if Jordan could be persuaded to take the West Bank and Gaza, that might take the heat off of Israel

Honestly - Israel needs to realize they are an island in a sea of folks who wish them harm.

12. Lieberman at the Alfalfa Dinner: he has become "the first person in U.S. history to be granted a
pardon by a president before he had taken office."

I have NO idea how that got assembled. I also fail to understand the affinity between DHS and gov't affairs.

Why should you thank someone for voting in his own interest? He's always done this, and nothing else.
