The LA-Las Vegas High-Speed Rail "Earmark" is a Republican lie!

There were $8 billion inserted into the final bill for high-speed rail. This came at the initiative of Reid, John Kerry, and Obama himself. Reid backed the plan because one of the most promising corridors for high-speed rail is a Los Angeles-Las Vegas line (and since California is already developing an extensive high-speed rail line, a Las Vegas spoke could be quite doable).

However, the stimulus does NOT earmark money specifically for this project. The authority over this money will go the Transportation Dept. and will require bids by states. It is simply funding for high-speed rail. This is not an earmark, and it could easily go to California, to the Northeast, or the Midwest. It is not specific to LA-LV.

5. Even if it was earmarked for LA - Vegas, the project is good

Good for the future of transportation.
Good for the people it will put to work developing it, constructing it and eventually operating.
Good for the environment reducing the fossil fuels used by the large amount of traffic between those two cities.

Good for Las Vegas, 2 hours from LA to Vegas, that would at least save some lives, but more people would be able to take that 2 hour trip. More people would have time to take that trip, catch the mag-lev out in evening and back early morning.

If that was the best they could do in objection to the stimulus they may as well STFU
