Dagmar Celeste has a long history of working on issues that make a difference for women. As Ohio's first lady she worked with her husband to make sure that there were women in every department who would be accountable for women's issues. Other achievements as first lady include an initiative to establish state-sponsored child-care, the Task-Force on Family Violence, co-chairing the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism, and the Council on Holocaust Education. She is also active in the National Peace Institute, Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament, the Council for Ethics in Economics, and the Women's Community Fund in Cleveland.

In 2002 she revealed that she was secretly ordained as a priest in the Catholic Church, for which was subsequently excommunicated.

She serves as the executive director of the Tyrian network, "an intentional learning community founded in the year 2000 on Kelleys Island, Ohio and dedicated to Brigid, both the Goddess and the Saint".
