I'd bet good money that those EXECUTIVE hypocrites at Kelloggs also "smoked a little dope" back in their teens and early twenties.

Self-righteous hypocrites! :puke:

10. I was very impressed by Phelps.
As a young man of 23 y.o. he was very mature and contrite without grovel. A class act.

Michael Phelps is more of "a likable person" to me now that I know he's human, vice amphibian. :silly: :-)

9. Aaauuuggghhhh! Phelps' native Bawlmer faces quite a dilemma...
Hydrox® Cookies are a perennial favorite there, if almost nowhere else. Pressure from distraught Baltimoreans probably led Kellogg's to acquire the brand from the defunct Sunshine Baking Co.

What to do, what to do?

15. HEY!: I HATE pot and I LOVE cereal !!!!
and even I'm all for this.

I don't like pot. Never have. But it is so stupid for it to be illegal and all of the reason given for it being so are bunk! It is illegal, because you can literally grow it in a flower pot on your window sill. So, the drug companies can't figure out how to profit from it. If they could, it would be legal tomorrow.

Michael Phelps did something extroidinary for this country this summer. He swam his heart out not just for himself or his team, but for his country. And lord only knows, after the last 8 years, the country and the world needed a feel good moment courtesy of the USA.

Our last three Presidents have admitted to smoking marijuana. So, what's the big deal?

I think Michael was stupid, only in that he did this in front of virtual strangers and shouldn't have trusted them.

But the picture is out there. And frankly, if we do boycott Kellogg's and they lose sales over firing Michael Phelps, it could end up being the first, real, concrete step to legalizing it.

So, despite the fact that I like my cereal and cookies....AND I DETEST POT....I will sign up for the boycott and make my calls!

37. In a world full of cellphone cameras
it's a bit disingenuous to suggest Phelps necessarily "allowed" the photo to be taken. IMHO, somebody saw an opportunity to make a buck by selling the photo to the tabloids. For me this falls into the same category as naive kids posting highly personal info and images on Facebook or Myspace. One never know what will be done with that stuff. Phelps may have been naive or "stupid" in that way, but I'm willing to cut him some slack. For the record, I don't use pot, but I don't mind those who do. It's much less destructive than alcohol, a legal substance, and prosecuting people for using pot is a truly stupid waste of resources.

42. I believe this is the most well reasoned post
It was something I was trying to say further down the thread but you captured all my points and more in a straight to the point and simple. I don't quite believe he falls in the myspace category because he wasn't the one who posted the photo. I can't imagine Michael Phelps saying, here "take my photo". It certainly was sneaky, however if he did in fact purposely pose then he is a dumb, stupid, or whatever people in the MSM has been saying about him.

Kellogg's has every right to fire him.

The closest was Raisin Bran, but I've long substituted my breakfast cereal with Cheerios (made by General Mills) and Honey Bunches of Oats (made by Post).

I bet money the guy with the photo smoked as well. If he was trying to be the good guy he wouldn't of held on to the photo as long, it's been reported photo was taken in November and when he does he releases it to a tabloid paper and it's no secret they pay their sources and I bet he is a wealthy for the time being.

47. Doesn't Kellogg realize that there are millions
of us baby boomers who have at least once in our life smoked marijuana? If Phelps is "tainted" by his smoking, then I guess that millions of us baby boomers are also presumed to be tainted in the eyes of Kellogg. Way to alienate an entire generation.

55. They sell to kids, though.
Sure, it's the parents and grandparents who buy the stuff, but they focus their marketing on kids.

Then there's the whole history of the company--moral cleanliness, etc., left over from the first Kelloggs and the Sanitarium. They're staying true to their image, and considering the local paper just did a huge expose on the drug problem in Battle Creek, I'd bet that the decision was made with an eye toward local issues as well.
