What's the antidote to disaster capitalism?
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 11:59 AM by Jackpine Radical
Disaster socialism.

People banding together to see to their mutual interests, helping each other, organizing on the local level, communicating with other groups, and inviting the capitalists to communual pig roasts.

3. This sounds like a much more reasonable and practical solution.
Invite the capitalists to be the pig roast.

13. Yes. That's what I meant. I assumed the phrase
"Capitalist pig" would leap to mind.

7. The problem with most revolutionaries...
and their revolutions is that their solution is rarely any better than the original problem.

(If they have a solution at all.)

9. Let's hope it's a peaceful one
Violent revolutions are nasty and uncomfortable and generally don't work until all the revolutionary leaders have died off and the wonks get back into control and ameliorate some of the harsher conditions.

Some violence in the form of riots is generally necessary before true revolutionary change can be accomplished. Whether or not that remains true is moot at this point.

6. You want people banding together on a local level?
Increase the price of doing everything. Make everything more inefficient. That would be the antidote to what we've been doing all these years, in making everything cheaper and more efficient.

You want people banding together on a local level? Don't make efficient cars.

You want people banding together on a local level? Stop the mass production economy.

You want people banding together on a local level? Make people need each other.

8. Returning To 1945-1980 Capitalism?
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 12:13 PM by MannyGoldstein
GDP rose rapidly, all boats rose, and government was solvent. What was not to like?

Reagan's crew created this false choice between pure capitalism and pure communism.

11. "Disaster Socialism"
I like it.

Met up with a local organic growers co-op this week. One of the founders actually was able to get a state rep to push an amendment on the tax code for online farmer's markets, so that they are treated the same as "real" farmer's markets - regarding the tax code.

She made life better for farmers all over the state by working with the state legislature.

Community support for this org is phenomenal. People go online to see what is available from the growers and value added producers and then meet once a week at the community center to pick up their eggs, bread, goat cheese, whatever.

Things on the national level are a tangle and I see no hope for any of us little people unless we take initiative ourselves. People don't like to hear that but I see it as reality.

I am fed up with waiting for all the smart, well-paid folks to figure it out. I am only making $300 a month working one day a week and I don't have patience anymore for the rhetoric of people who couldn't give a damn about me. It's time to say to hell with it and work around the system by creating a new system for ourselves.

I hope more people will do the same.

18. I like the 'pig roast" idea
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 12:55 PM by JitterbugPerfume
It reminds me of Fried Green Tomatoes

I buy eggs , buffalo(roast and ground)

and produce (in season) from local farmers, but I would really like to do more. I love a good farmers market where you can talk to people and browse the goodies .

and by the way, I am an unrepentant Socialist. My answer to the religo-nut right wingers is the words of Jesus himself---as you do unto the least of these , you do also unto me.

pretty good for an athiest , huh?
