Video Must See: CNN: Phelps unites pot smokers
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 01:46 PM by leftchick
This is the best Jeanne Moos report in a long time. :)

By David Edwards

CNN’s Jeanne Moos reported that the photo of Michael Phelps smoking a bong has united pot smokers on the internet.

This video is from CNN’s American Morning, broadcast Feb. 4, 2009.

Edit: Here is an interesting take on the whole kerfuffle here.....

<snip>

Phelps made a mistake, an error in judgment, during last year’s visit to Gamecocks’ country. That’s evident. But, he didn’t do anything some former U.S. presidents and congressmen have admitted to, and, we’ll wager, plenty of newspaper writers and readers indulged in during their youth.

Phelps just got caught in the act by some weasel spending far too much time snapping photos of people in uncompromising positions.

That News of the World first published the Phelps photo is no surprise to Tunku Varadarajan, a professor at the Stern Business School at New York University and opinions editor at www.forbes.com. Said Varadarajan:

“In the hierarchy of life forms on this, our earth, the British tabloid journalist lies somewhere between the hagfish and the dung beetle: However, a story Sunday in the News of the World (proprietor: Keith Rupert Murdoch) has made me scratch my chin and wonder whether we are, in fact, being a tad unkind to the dung beetle.

“The paper’s great coup was to lay its grubby, Little-England hands on a photograph of (Michael) Phelps with his mouth pressed firmly into a glass pipe, or ‘bong.’ The story’s pseudo-declamatory opening line (a tabloid art form, in itself) was: ‘This is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.’ Given that Michael Phelps’ career would have remained blissfully undestroyed had the paper chosen not to publish the photograph, one has to marvel at the amoral audacity of the News of the World: in purporting to ‘report’ on the potential harm to Phelps’ image and career from having smoked cannabis, the newspaper was, in fact, ‘perpetrating’ that very harm.”

6. I on the other hand think most Americans know how many have smoked pot and
wouldn't mind its legalization at all.

4. Oh God, his representatives have to be dying.
It'll be interesting to see how much Phelps earns as a pop culture hero as opposed to a corporate spokesman.

$100 million in endorsements with AT&T, Visa, Hilton Hotels, Kellogg's, Rosetta Stone, Speedo and Nestle and others, up in smoke?

His DUI was far more serious than this incident .. one that doesn't bother me at all.

Unfortunately, I don't think the corporations will have the same take as I do.

7. I really like how this article says, "Smoked Cannabis"..
Instead of the more derogatory "smoked pot" or "smoked weed".

Good on them.
