Navy school takes on Salinas gangs
Violence experts’ role will be advisory, may help provided funding

Federal violence and terrorism experts from the Naval Postgraduate School, who deal with the likes of Al-Qaida, have been recruited to help fight the deep-rooted gang subculture in Salinas.

And agents of the federal office of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have been assigned to gang-busting duty in the city.

“We need to break the back” of gangs, Mayor Dennis Donohue said as he announced the double-barrel help at a Monday press conference at City Hall.

“Frankly, after three or four decades, we’re no longer interested in coexistence side-by-side with this subculture that has become embedded in our community,” Donohue declared.

The Naval Postgraduate School is trying to figure out how to stop violence anywhere in the world, why not start in our own backyard,” Farr said.

NPS is the nation’s premier center for the study of global and homeland security and violence issues and the training of government experts with advanced degrees in the field.

2. guess they didn't close it....
I thought the Navy was closing NPS. I assume this is the campus in Monterrey. I smoked a joint in the BOQ there about ten years ago, LOL. I'm not in the Navy, but I was doing some contracted ecological survey work on their nicely restored beach property and staying on site.

Anyway, I was bummed to hear that the place was closing-- it's a lovely campus-- so I'm glad to hear they're still there.

4. no, not at all....
I was just reminiscing about the place itself, and a couple of fine summer weeks I spent there once. Sorry, it was a bit off topic.

6. Ummm..
Those lovely young people you are referring to tend to really fuck people / property / communities / everything they get near up...

What is wrong with applying lessons learned about breaking up criminal / militant organizations?

7. I never said lovely - knowing the history of why these young people

get into the life of gangs is the remedy. not Navy 'terror' experts.

what a baby gets born into is what that child has to survive. making that survival easier would go a long way in lowering gang membership.

8. Again... ummm...
Did you stop to think that maybe a few of those eggheads might have an idea along similiar lines? An integral part of COunter INsurgency (COIN) is creating an environment in which crime and violence are not encouraged to thrive.

Maybe you should send them an email with your insights?

9. It's a police problem -- not a military problem
There are good reasons for not wanting the military to become the national police. We've survived a couple of hundred years without that. Now, we're bordering on banana republic status.

Maybe if the no-tax/low-tax numbskulls hadn't gutted local and state budgets, we would have to have the military imposing a police state on us.
