When are the stimulus checks expected to show up in mailboxes?
I'm personally annoyed that I have to send checks to NY and US and then get a bigger check back later (if I've done my math right).

1. My understanding is we won't get checks just less taken by payroll tax
maybe $12-20 dollars more in your paycheck. Faster and people are more likely to spend that money than a lump sum thats easier to put in the bank.

I assumed they were doing it the way they did before, and my mom was asking me this question earlier today. Sounds like it will be nearly worthless for me in the short term.

3. No stimulus checks unless Senate changes legislation. Average is $13-$20 per payroll deduction
I don't really see how that will stimulate the economy. We need more $$ for infrastructure. More people put to work and more paying spending $$

4. I'll have to correct my mom, and I agree
she's been following the economic stuff on the news more carefully than I have but she must have misunderstood. If I got a $500 check right now, it would make a difference - buying stuff, or putting it toward debt so I would feel more comfortable spending in the coming months. Right now all I know is my employer is not giving annual raises this year, so I guess that "stimulus" will help a little bit with cost of living.

5. If you have a job, you'll get an extra $20 a week or so.
If you don't have a job, no stimulus for you.

7. not necessarily, they are increasing unemployment benefits and extending them
and I think I read somewhere that the house bill calls for increases in Food Stamps and even some health care coverage for the unemployed. Plus money spent on infrastructure should help put some unemployed people back to work.

8. $20 a week? Wow..that'll do it alright...That'll re-fire the economy by about the second week or so.

11. An extra $20 a week times millions of families spending more on groceries is a massive stimulus.
It's not big-ticket items like plasma TVs that are going to right this problem, it's ordinary people spending more on ordinary things.

You are right about one thing, though - it won't turn the GLOBAL ECONOMIC MELTDOWN around in two weeks. :eyes:

16. That really is not massive, and there are things between plasma TV's and a bag of onions
which count as everyday purchases which could be purchased if the stimulus was less focused on bailing out those who already HAVE and more focused on those who DON'T, the homeless, unemployed - yes, there are UI extensions and such, but not enough.

21. This can help those who don't have jobs.
The point is not merely handing out money, but rebuilding the economy. Obviously there is a GREAT need for expanded homeless services (including HOMES) and hunger relief. However: more people buying a bag of onions => grocery store needs to restock onions more often => distributor needs to buy more onions => from more farms. Every step along the way calls for job creation over time. I know it's been a long time since anyone's seen it so it's understandable that we may forget, but this is what demand-side stimulus looks like. This is REAL, not phony, theoretical, give-the-rich-more-money-to-create-more-jobs supply-sider fairy tales. Giving working families more resources for necessities creates more wealth (less joblessness and homelessness) in the long term than giving millionaires more money for yachts, like we've been doing for about 30 years. It's finally starting, and DU, true to predictable fucking form, is crabby because it's not perfect right out of the gate.

18. No kidding
$20 bucks a week, 4 weeks a month, an extra $80 bucks a month will buy my family a lot of diapers and groceries. Yeah, that's stimulus I can use.

30. Did they do anything to reduce the taxes you owe on Apr 15.
If all the did was lower the withholding but did not change the tax rate, you will at least receive less of a refund or you may owe them money.

without any job related income.

There are a lot of folks that pay taxes on income from sources other than traditional employment. Self-emplolyment, social security, pension, disability, royalty, lottery and gambling winnings, other retirement or investment income. Any tax stimulus that rewards those with empoyment related income while penalizing those with income from other sources is manifestly unfair. Apparently these folks are less deserving than others and must bear an even greater share of the tax burden. Fuck that.

19. They are debating whether or not the other stimulus did any good?
How can we prove a negative? It seems that it helped some in the last six months or so. I know it helped us. We spent it.
----------
They must decide if simply giving unemployment checks and food stamps is enough to stimulate the economy. I think average folks should be given another stimulus check. What harm could it do?
