Octuplets Mom has been in hospital for 7 weeks...
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 10:56 AM by JeffreyWilliamson
According to this article:

As the initial excitement over the “miracle” octuplets wears off, some medical professionals now say more should have been done by doctors and infertility specialists to perdissuade the mother to reduce the number of babies she was carrying.

Weinert said that the real miracle at Bellflower was not that all eight embryos developed, but that she was able to carry them for 30 weeks, seven weeks after being admitted into the hospital.

On the surface this doesn't seem too surprising--after all doctors reportedly thought she was carrying seven babies. But when you consider that the mother lives with her parents in a 2-bedroom house, that the family makes about $61K annually in household income, (as other articles have stated), AND that the mother's parents declared bankruptcy in 2008.

Who is going to take care of these children, and what was everyone involved in this thinking?

18. I agree.
If ever a woman was NOT infertile...

Moreover, this lady has mental health issues. NOT a good candidate on any level.

Young Fundies are told that copulating will lead them to Hell, but then the example set before them is that copulating excessively over many years leads you to a Rich and Retired lifestyle supported by the idiocy of others.

Ya gotta admire folk like that, yanno?

feelings of outrage at the stimulus bill, and concern about reaching across the aisle to Republicans.

In the end I perdissuaded myself from doing that and just stuck to the octuplet lady story.

12. What do you wanna bet the fundies' support will stop at
slapping her picture all over their mailers?

Pretty sure the doctors need to get some serious heat over this. Admittedly I'm not up on IVF consultations or treatments. Would the doctors in any way have screened for financial stability or income level, or just done what she asked provided she could write out a check?

Seems to me the doctors have some serious explaining to do.

20. You're missing malpractice and a clear mental health issue.
The lady was demonstrably NOT infertile. And any woman who wants fertility treatments with 6 kids and the most recent ones twins is NUTS, certifiably loony tunes. How could any physician assist this obsession and NOT recommend a psychiatrist?

Also....WHERE WERE THE BILLS SENT? This isn't a cheap process. Who was the doctor billing?

Apparently all her children are from IVF. And her parents say she's obsessed with children. She seems mentally ill to me.

27. If all her kids are from IVF, how is it that the first 6 pregnancies all resulted
in one or two, and now this most recent has resulted in EIGHT??? Did a different, less conscientious (read: more unethical and greedy) doctor do the last one?

You know, if this woman had wanted to just have her embryos one by one, I don't think anyone would give a damn. Having 8 at one time is simply insane.

procedures. So my guess is this time more embryos (whatever was left) had been implanted than in her previous treatments.

17. The problem here isn't a mother who wanted to keep all
her potential babies alive, even risking her own life to do so (and a pregnancy is always a risk, a multiple like this one an extreme risk).

The problem here is the doctor. It is unethical to implant more than three fertilized ova at a time. There are international guidelines that say this and it is the standard of care for IVF clinics countrywide.

This doctor was irresponsible and unethical. S/he needs his/her license pulled over this one. This isn't a miracle. It's a potential tragedy. That he escaped with a live patient and live infants this time is a fluke. Unless he is stopped, he will kill somebody.

31. ITA. The only exception is that it is possible that if he did implant only three...
all of them could have split once, I bet, but that doesn't explain the other two babies, unless there was another split of two embryos.

It is absurd for a doc to implant eight embryos and not expect problems for mom and babies.

Religious people need ot get off this baby worship thing they have going on. Babies can be a real blessing, but 14 kids can be hard on everyone, including the kids. Planet Earth doesn't need more babies.

39. Agreed
The only way I would say it was ethical on the doctor's part is if this is a freak occurance where they put in only a few embryos and they all took and all split into identicals. Because a pregnancy with 8 is dangerous, I would say it is justified for a doctor to refuse to participate in trying to produce such a pregnancy. But the number of children she already had should not have been a factor if she only wanted to transfer them 1-3 at a time.
