Teachers/librarian assistants in my district being "reassigned" or let go
So much for teaching be one of the "safer" professions...this is in the same city where nurses got layed off from a local hospital due to low census (too many area hospitals, not enough patients/doctors to go around).

Previously, the district announced that it would cut $1.5 million in salaries, but did not give details on the number and type of positions that would be cut.

More than eight teacher positions in the Discover Program, the district's elementary school program for some advanced students, will be trimmed. Those teachers, who are under contract, will have the option to go into existing or future teaching positions, according to the district.

More than 29 elementary library assistant positions will be eliminated. The district hopes that volunteers and parents will help out in the libraries that would be affected.

The school district also announced that it's taking other actions to reduce its $14 million budget deficit. The district will adjust elementary school class sizes to achieve consistency across grades and schools. Also, secondary-level teachers will now teach six of the seven periods a day – one more daily period than they currently do.

Several Plano school employees will lose their jobs under a plan to reduce the district's multimillion-dollar budget deficit.

School board members approved layoffs and other personnel actions estimated to save Plano ISD $1.5 million.

Targeted are employees in two departments: elementary academic services and library/media services.

The district is taking other actions to reduce its $14 million budget deficit. The district shaved about $500,000 by implementing energy-efficiency measures and it benefited from the drop in gasoline prices, said Richard Matkin, the district's associate superintendent for business services.

1. This is actually happening all over the country
They're proposing something similar in Charlotte and I know I read something about this happening in New York as well.

2. Library assistant is a low paying job.
Classes will be larger. How many 6-figure salaried administrators are being laid off?
