This kind of fuzzy editorializing is a direct result of j-school grads from 10-15 years ago embracing "alternative storytelling," "nontraditional ledes" and "colorful language" in an effort to "draw readers in" and "show, not tell." Just report the goddamn story already and leave the fancy writing to novelists.

7. You missed out, then. Part of the reason I got out of it was the total slacking-off on standards
for reporters and the encouragement of softer, more oblique ledes. It's driving me right up the fracking wall.
