This year will be seen as the recovery year. We are facing a deep recession, possibly a depression. Want to know how bad it is? We still don't know what we're going to call it. 'The Next Great Depression', 'the Second Depression', 'The Great Stagnation', 'The Bursting Bubbles'? We don't know, yet.
But, this year could be marked as 'The Great Recovery'. If, and it's a big if, the adults of the government can implement the necessary projects.
The Republican House has proven, out of the gate that the wish to stand, lockstep, in the way of the recovery. So be it. We don't need them. We saw that today, as EVERY REPUBLICAN HOUSE MEMBER was defeated.
They will either continue to obstruct, or they will look to 2010 and reach across the aisle. Either way, they will not be a viable political force for the next two years, or in 2010.
The Senate, we need to pay attention to. 15 are up for re-election. 4 are retiring. Once AL Franken is seated, we will need one Senator from the right to join us each time we need to defeat a filibuster. There are a few moderates that will keep things moving, Snowe for example. But, here are the vulnerable ones, with their jobs on the line in 2010:
Richard Shelby of Alabama Lisa Murkowski of Alaska John McCain of Arizona Johnny Isakson of Georgia Mike Crapo of Idaho Chuck Grassley of Iowa Jim Bunning of Kentucky David Vitter of Louisiana Judd Gregg of New Hampshire Richard Burr of North Carolina Tom Coburn of Oklahoma Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania Jim DeMint of South Carolina John Thune of South Dakota Bob Bennett of Utah
Retiring are Brownback (Kansas), Martinez (Florida), Bond (Missouri) and Voinovich (Ohio)
Some of these are from red states, with little chance of turning, but most of these should be the pressure points from the next two years. This is where we can divide them, and end them as a party, at least for a couple of cycles.
Those running for re-election will need to be a part of this recovery, or they are done.
