Any NE Ohio people on the board. Rumor is a house just exploded.
Apparently, there was a feeling like an earthquake in that area. We did not feel it where we are. People we know from that area said that they heard there was a house explosion.

Conneaut is way east of that, Ashtabula County, practically in Pa.

41. Meth labs don't actually explode
At least not enough to mimic an earthquake. What they call an "explosion" is really just a flash fire.

42. Oh, they can explode.
Usually they're flash fires. But if the amount of vapor, usually ethyl ether, is within the explosion limit it'll rock the whole neighborhood.

No one else seems to be on the story yet. I've checked all the local newspaper and stations, and the station we're watching doesn't even have a scroller.

http://www.fox8.com/wjw-houseexplodes,0,4236384.story

The local stations are WEWS (5), WKYC (3), WOIO (19), and WJW (8), and the local paper is the Cleveland Plain Dealer, in case you want to keep checking yourself.

Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 10:50 PM by TahitiNut
I'm getting to the point that "house explodes" makes me think "meth lab." Changing times - I'd once assume gas leak.

19. Honestly, i don't know.
A meth lab could, i suppose, be anywhere. But it is not an obvious area for it. It is an oddly mixed economic area because of the lake. One side of the street can be quite different than the other depending on the location. It happened on a street that runs quite a distance along the lake.

The news should be covering it some more in a few minutes. I will update.

21. Don't know.
I'm about 60 miles south of there - so I'm not familiar with that neighborhood.

Most recent report says, "An elderly man and woman were reportedly living in the house and were lifeflighted to MetroHealth Medical Center with first degree and second degree burns." Cause of the explosion unknown.

carrying hazardous materials derailed near Painesville in Northeast Ohio this afternoon. The CSX train that derailed was traveling from Cleveland to Buffalo, NY when it hit a gas line, resulting in a massive explosion and fire. A half mile area around the site of the train derailment is being evacuated, including one elementary school. So far, no injuries have been reported.

16. Update: There are two lifeflight helicopters being sent to the area.
On the news they just reported that people are trapped. We are not sure if there was damage to other homes in the area or if the people trapped are from the home that exploded.

Several local cities are responding.

25. New update. The house is COMPLETELY gone.
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 11:12 PM by FedUpWithIt All
They showed pictures and the house is just debris. A man who had been driving nearby stopped and was able to help an elderly man who was trapped in the burning debris. The man's wife was also rescued. They are in pretty serious condition.

Neighbors across Lakeshore had their windows and porch railings blown off their homes. At this point i would have to say that this must be gas related.

"NewsChannel5's John Kosich said the victims are a husband and wife in their 80s. Neighbors said that after the explosion, the man was found sitting in a recliner, calling for help, and his wife was lying on the floor."

http://www.newsnet5.com/news/18590894/detail.html

Good thoughts for this couple tonight. I hope they are going to be alright.

Just moved away from that street a few months ago. And I have two sisters nearby. I'm calling them.

Edited to add: Everyone's fine in my group. But one of my sisters did think she saw a big flash of light from that direction at the time of the explosion. They definitely heard the sirens. (This is western Lake County.) The explosion happened further east down the road from where I used to live (I was just a ways over the Cuyahoga line) but not that far. Yeesh.
