March 24, 2007 -- THE reason given by the White House for President Bush missing the 122nd annual Washington Gridiron dinner March 31 is that he will entertain Brazil's President Lula da Silva that weekend. But a key adviser urged him six weeks ago to skip the gathering of the journalists club.

The adviser attended the Jan. 27 Alfalfa dinner in Washington and was struck by the "tepid" greeting given the president by the elite audience. If an audience presumed friendly to Bush was cool, he feared the reception from hostile newsies.

Vice President Dick Cheney cleared a schedule conflict so that he could substitute for the president at the Gridiron dinner.

3. Someone thinks Cheney would get a more respectful reception?
the man is human and has buttons to push...he has his own basket of neurosis just like everyone else....push his buttons hard and often - then just sit back and watch the show.

10. Then they are fools and cowards
and are missing a wonderful chance to shatter a tired worn out perception that Cheney can't be touched

6. The Gridiron Dinner is a tradition that needs to be stopped.
Presidents - going back to FDR - have hated it. FDR really hated going.

This or the White House Press Correspondents' Dinner should be stopped. They're redundant and there is just too much forced and awkward humor, such as Imus saying vulgar things about the Clintons in front of the Clintons.

Well, Colbert gutted Bush at that dinner, didn't he?
It sure looked that way to me.

Everyone knows that Imus is a self-centered asshole.

12. The Gridiron and White House Corresp. Dinners are self-congratulatory circle jerks...
for the press, who deserve no such affirmation this year, or most years. They're yet another of those events where the press folks socialize with the people they are supposed to be covering.

What Colbert did to Bush does not make what Imus did right.
