I walked into an unaffiliated grocery story today, and
as I stood in line ready to buy my veggies, potato and NYT, I listened to a couple of old biddies in front.

"I don't quite understand it all, but that Gonzales man seems to be in trouble. I don't like liars."
"Um humm. He should quit. You can't trust any of them anymore.
"I just hope we get our troops out. My son-in-law's brother's son is in Baghdad. A nice boy. He wrote that things are a lot worse than what we see."
"You know, I am embarrassed by how I voted. I never thought Bush would be so bad."

not quite verbatim, I can't transcribe old biddie-talk that quickly, but the sentiment was clear.

an old biddy is an old young chicken

8. Urban Dictionary defines it thusly (and accurately)
1. Old Biddy
Old woman
That old biddy shouldn't be on the road.

Popular term used in the South and mid-West to describe some blue-haired little old ladies. It's really not supposed to be derogatory - but more affectionate. :)

37. The male equivilant is, "An old coot."
Edited on Sat Mar-24-07 11:51 AM by Clark2008
;)

You know that you are an Old Coot when

* You sit on a rocking chair and can't get it going.
* Your knees buckle but your belt won't.
* Your back goes out more than you do.
* You hear a Beatles' song from your youth on the Muzak in the elevator (caveat: I heard a Paul Young song from the 80s in Muzak version at my doctor's office recently. It's not reserved for just 60s music.)
* Everything hurts, and what doesn't hurt doesn't work.
* Your little black book contains only names ending in "M.D."
* You can't wait for Baskin-Robbins to market an oat-bran ice cream.
* You know all the answers, but nobody asks you the questions.
* The gleam in your eye is from the sun hitting your bifocals.
* You sink your teeth into a steak, and they stay there.
* You need glasses to find your glasses.
* You know what LSMFT means.
* You finally reach the top of the ladder and find it leaning against the wrong wall.
* You're still chasing women, but can't remember why.
* Your mind makes contracts that your body can't meet.
* The little gray-haired lady you help across the street is your wife.

23. I'm sorry to post on-topic...
... but....

The part of this story - and others like it - that bothers me, is that these ladies represent exactly what's wrong with this country.

It takes 6 years of a totally un-American mis-administration and a totally disastrous war for a large chunk of the American population to glim to the idea that something is wrong. Then they act like the situation is unchangeable... it's just awful, but it's just the way it is. Americans act like observers, not participants.

The one lady is embarrassed about how she voted.... and 3200 of our people are dead, and 60,000-250,000 Iraqis are dead. She's embarrassed.... and the remains of our democracy are laying in the ditch where Dumbya threw it.

Americans ought to be embarrassed.. and enraged!

29. Oh for god sake! What's wrong with you people? The term
"old biddie" was used to describe the scene at the store. Don't you think it would make an entirely different scene if it would have "two biker babes", or "two really handsom dudes", or what ever description fit?

I knew exactly what the two ladies were like when I read theOP, and I don't see a damn thing wrong with the term BIDDIE either!

And YES, I'm a 63 year old lady, so I have every right to tell you I don't see it as derogatory at all!!!!

30. "Women" would have worked for me.
Or "ladies", but "biddies" is insulting. I see no reason for it. Especially considering they were coming around politically. We insult people who are RIGHT? Geez, what do we do with those we disagree with?

32. Well, I'm just sick of all the damn political correctness!
I much prefer the more descriptive term, no matter who or what the topic is.

I don't find the term offensive, but people get offended all the time, sometimes for valid reasons and sometimes not.

Everybpdy needs to thicken up their skin a little and listen to the total story.

34. I'm just sick of people thinking they need to define everyone by age,
race, religion, ethnicity, hair-style or other descriptors in order to accurately interpret what they say. Why not simply take people's words at face value, with out making judgements based on appearance or age or whatever? And why not just be happy that these two women were coming around to your way of thinking?

Why insult them?

43. it is no insult, but a descriptor of
what is happening in my nape of the forest. When two cute old ladies, who go to church every sunday, who don't swear, don't drink, and who believe strongly in their god, who are good neighbors, and keep their porch flowers blooming, start to say the Gonzales should resign, it struck me as important. Far more than say, two folks posting on DU or Kos, or some other tube site.

don't drink, believe strongly in God, are good neighbors, keep their flowers blooming, and have been Dems their whole lives. In fact, apart from the not swearing part, and I'm not officially old yet (but soon), that's me! And I post on DU AND Kos and other tube sites.

You need to work harder on your stereotyping skills.

And as long as we insult folks, the best we can hope for is that they vote Dem once in a while. To get them to join, we need to treat them with respect.

I personally know a good dozen or so older folk who were aghast in 2002/2003 that anyone would hate this country so much they would oppose the Iraq war -- all of them are singing such a different tune now that it would be absolutely cruel to remind them they are partially responsible for us being there in the first place........

49. My son in law..
Who had just got out of the Marine Corps with a disability right before the Iraq war started, was pro Bush and pro war.

A couple of weeks ago he went on a rant, unprompted by me, about how Bush was an idiot and we just needed to get out of Iraq. I took him inside to the computer and showed him the video of Bush sitting on his ass for at least five minutes after being told by Andrew Card that America was under attack. Then I showed him the speech transcript on the White House website where Bush claimed to have seen the first plane hit the WTC live on television.. He had very little to say.

Day before yesterday I asked him what he thought before the war when I predicted it was going to turn out to be a disaster. I told him it wouldn't hurt my feelings no matter what he said..

He evaded my question. :)
