The worst food of 2009
Baskin-Robbins Large Chocolate Oreo Shake
# 2,600 calories
# 135 g fat (59 g saturated fat, 2.5 g trans fats)
# 263 g sugars
# 1,700 mg sodium

We didn't think anything could be worse than Baskin-Robbins' 2008 bombshell, the Heath Bar Shake. After all, it had more sugar (266 grams) than 20 bowls of Froot Loops, more calories (2,310) than 11 actual Heath Bars, and more ingredients (73) than you'll find in most chemist labs. Rather than coming to their senses and removing it from the menu, they did themselves one worse and introduced this caloric catastrophe. It's soiled with more than a day's worth of calories and three days' worth of saturated fat, and, worst of all, usually takes less than 10 minutes to sip through a straw.

You know this burger's in trouble when it takes more than 20 syllables just to identify it. If you think the name’s a mouthful, just wait until the burger hits the table. There was a hamburger joint that served a wonderful bacon-chili-cheeseburger. Even though we nicknamed it the triple bypass burger, being 18 and invincible we still ate it.

Those two have had the same parent company for years. Some French company owned them for a while, but they sold to Carlyle in 2005. I believe Mitt Romney's Bain Capital owns a piece of them as well.

35. I have a longstanding soft spot for Chiles
I think they make good chicken sandwhiches and (gasp) fajitas.

I think of Chilis as airport food. I only eat at Chilis in airports (or near airports). many times it is the best option.

Would I eat there in a real city with real food? No. But that is not the question.

I can no longer eat beans out of a can, monterrey jack cheese or what most places pass off as "salsa". Call me a snob, but when you live in Mexico part time, you realize the real thing (which of course depends on the region) is about a million times better. Mole on tofu is probably the best thing ever...stuffed chayotes....ummmmm, yum.

74. "fajita" originally referred to
a certain cut of meat, what we call a skirt steak (from 'faja'), which is why I'm amused to see chicken and fish fajitas. My old (c. 1965) Mexican cookbook mentions flour tortillas as being a regional specialty, and nothing at all about burritos, which I'm pretty sure are an American invention.

IMHO there's nothing inherently wrong with adopting a cooking style or ingredients from one cuisine to another, but fast-food places take a decent idea (e.g., a burrito) and cram it full of all sorts of unnecessary fats and processed foods so what started out as beans and rice wrapped in a tortilla becomes beans and rice and meat and guacamole and sour cream and cheese until it's a day's meal in itself. I can understand why the burrito came to be in the first place - it's a handy, cheap lunch - but it's gone to extremes.

I gave up on Chili's when they stopped offering corn tortillas. If they can't make a passable corn tortilla they're not Mexican.

76. Ok, but aren't nachos another American invention?
My whole point in asking the question the other day was, why eat something at Chili's that's purported to be Mexican when you can probably get something better that is more or less authentic elsewhere in your town?

To be clear, I got nothing against a mishmash of ground beef, salsa, cheese, beans and corn chips if it's done well, but it's not what I go for when I want Mexican food.

not having soy sauce on the table is perfectly Chinese. It's used only while cooking, and adding it at the table is something like pouring cooking oil on your plate. It is certainly not put on rice.

28. PF Chang's is More Fusion Than Chinese Cooking
and it's pretty good if it's taken in that sense.

A lost of real Chinese is not particularly appetizing to Americans. Either too bland or too hot. Either starchy, watery, adn either full of leaves or animal parts that are not popular. A good menu can take the dishes that lend themselves to US tastes and make them more appealing.

the burger is fine, if you cut it into about 10 pieces.
sounds delicious actually. it's just the portion control that's out of whack in america. something that decadent -- and there's absolutely zero wrong with decadence in principle -- should be managed with reasonable portions, a la french cuisine.

a good rule of thumb is to cut your meals eaten out in half, maybe even thirds if its particularly rich, and take the rest home. deliciousness should not be forsaken just because there is a problem with quantity. but alas, far too often we worry in america about "getting the best deal." not exactly doing us any favors, is it?

30. Thanks for posting.
Some incredible numbers there. One "beverage" supplying more than a day's worth of calories for most. The upside of being economically challenged these days is that we have most of our meals at home, cooked from organic, basic ingredients. It would be pretty hard for me to come up with a complete meal that had as many calories as the Oreo shake.

(We owe our local pizzeria a purchase. I wanted to splurge and spend the money for a pizza on inauguration day as an act of optimism that the economy will improve, eventually, under the Obama administration. Had to postpone because my husband worked that night.)

31. I'm starting to think some of these are artifically inflated.

I mean think about it - of course anything that is deep fried, covered in cheese and served with a side of ranch dressing is going to be bad for you. Of course a quadruple bacon cheeseburger is going to be bad for you. And the extra large nacho plate. And so on and so forth. And a large tuna melt? Come on, who the fuck eats a large sandwich for lunch unless you're splitting it between people? Any time I ever go to Quiznos I only see people ordering small or regular.

33. Please, lets be fair: Baskin-Robins 08 entry does have 3 fewer grams of
sugar than their '07 shake.
Practically health food.

(FWIW - I got a banana split there last summer and it sucked. They have lousy ice cream for an ice cream shop.)

47. I'm sorry, but I just can't behind the notion of making such big eats illegal.
I'm not in favor of them. I find them disgusting in some cases. But we need to draw a line someplace as to what we "police".

I'm a former smoker. I never resented anti-smoking laws. Second hand smoke has a direct impact on bystanders.

Apart from getting grossed out by a fart or a burp, these megameals don't directly injure others. I don't want to hear about how much they cost us in medical intervention; that argument is not the same as the direct irreversible health impact of things like second hand smoke.

50. That shake is only 5g short of a QUARTER POUND OF FAT
Over half a pound of sugar (1 pound = 453.59237 grams)
and teaspoon of salt.

Those are SOME of the basic ingredients of four large angel food
cakes.

No wonder it's getting harder to find clothes to fit children

64. I'm with you!
I'm gagging just looking at that list. Give me a huge, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink (healthy ingredients only) salad with a nice, homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing anyday.

68. Yick. WTF with ranch dressing on everything? My older son tells tales
of the cafeteria at school where most of the kids he sits with completely smother everything with either cheese sauce, ketchup, or ranch. He finds it disgusting, as do I. People don't seem to know what actual food is supposed to taste like anymore--everything either tastes like buffalo wings or ranch.

70. I agree with your son
When I was in high school, people would dip everything in ranch....pizza, french fries, bagels. It was so gross.
