Just since yesterday, it's starting to sink in, that the US has a black man as president, and his
name is 'Barack Hussein Obama', and it makes me so proud. I guess it's two things: one, the media calls him "President Obama" which is itself surreal but second, a black man has won the most powerful public office on the planet and holds press conferences and as a white man, I just find that so transcendent, given the history of black people in the United States.

Now obviously, he's going to have to actually do his job, lol, but just being a little superficial, these things actually make me hopeful for our country.

1. A black man named "Hussein". I still giggle when I think of that.
Only George Bush could've fucked things up badly enough to make this possible (at this time, at least).

Thanks George!

3. No kidding, the one good thing to come out of the last
hideous 8 years of an illegal presidency was that the country was fed up enough to elect a black guy with a funny name.

Maybe 40-60 years from now when the conservatives have gotten into power again and fucked things up as badly, the country will be fed up enough to elect a woman.

7. Why 40 years from now? Why not 8 years from now?
;)

10. Because that's not the way things work, unfortunately
Black males got the vote in the 1860s, although it wasn't enforced in the deep south until the 1960s. Women didn't get the vote until 1920.

One despised group at a time, yanno?

8. That day will come
Personally, if Obama gets term two (which I think he will, unless Palin gets lucky), I think Biden might step aside, and let a Kathleen Sibelius or Janet Napolitano come in, get momentum for 2016. It won't be Caroline Kennedy yet.

I know some people thought Obama voters were sexist, truth be told, it was not that idea of a woman being president that was an issue, but one very specific woman, who made very specific choices we disagreed with, though that can change depending on how she does as Secretary of State. As vile as as the PLO and Hamas are (and they are) she will need to tell Israel the days of the infinite support are OVER. If she reigns in Israel, she may very well make a run in 2016, having atoned for her threats to "obliterate" countries that defied her edicts.

2. you know, I never thought of him as black or white or anything
when people started bringing it up during the inaugural, I sort of wondered why it was an issue. I guess I just saw a guy who I agreed with on a few things, and disagreed with on a few other things.

5. True, but
that in and of itself was considered something impossible 8 years ago, the idea that a Black candidate can be just..a candidate.

6. Yeah, good point. I've often made the counterpoint, too that
he is as white as he is black. But yeah, it doesn't matter, unless you are racist, and considering how racist this country was for so long, I just think it's amazing, and not only that he won, but that he continues to enjoy a sky-high popularity rating that other presidents could have had only wet dreams about. :hi:

9. That's because he's not just black

but an excellent example of how a human being should be, let aside the President of the United States of America (yeah, I can say that again after 8 long years). I'm so white that I'm almost translucent (well, except for summertime, when I turn bright red sometimes) but I was raised color blind. My neighborhood is so diverse that when we meet up in the grocery it looks like the UN General Assembly and we are fucking proud of it. My bet is that when people watches -and listens- him, they see what's inside him, not just the melanin content of his skin.

Fuck the racists. Human species was born in East and Southern Africa, so we all are black people, although some of us suffer from melanin dysfunction.
