Support Nadler's ammendment for 3 billion for transit- Vote is at 3- call congress!
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 12:08 PM by liskddksil
Yesterday I posted about Defazio's amendment, which was withdrawn last night due to a parliamentary issue. However, Congressman Nadler has also issued an amendment for 3 billion in capitol projects for mass transit.
--------------------
Meanwhile, as Sarah mentioned last night, the focus in the House now shifts to Jerrold Nadler's proposal to add $3 billion for transit capital investments. The people to call today are Nancy Pelosi (202-225-0100) and Appropriations Chair David Obey (202-225-3365). The Speaker, especially, should be trying as hard as she can to make more room for transit investment if she wants to do right by her San Francisco district.

5. Because it is these projects - not taxcuts- that will create jobs
Furthermore public transit, especially rail and subways is environmentally friendly, saves gas, and reduces traffic on roads. In terms of developed countries we are at the bottom of the list, in our transportation infrastructure. With transporation systems such as New York's in financial peril, this additional funding is crucial.

7. But first I'd have to take the time to read through which projects are being funded
Could you give me a condensed version of your favorites?

8. I dont think there are any specifics
other than what the state DOTs have put on their wishlists for transit funding. All this ammendment means is that there will be 13 billion allocated instead of 10.

11. More details
The amendment would distribute $1.5 billion for the Transit Capital Assistance Program and $1.5 billion for Capital Assistance Grants, known as the New Starts Program.

13. Here's my problem with that mentality
I support mass transit and trains but I can't tell what this legislation will do for them.

You said it will finance projects supported by state DOTs.

My state's DOT focuses on building roads. That's not very conducive to mass transit, especially if the roads are used to facilitate development in outlying areas.

Is this how democracy should work?

Should we blindly support legislation that we know virtually nothing about just because it sounds good?

What am I missing here?

Success! According to WI Dem in the comments to the action post below, the Nadler amendment has been approved:

Nadler's amendment is a go. Now everyone can play, because there will be a floor vote tomorrow.
Alright! Thanks to everyone who called!

Now we can move forward and start whipping on the Nadler amendment. Call the congressional switchboard at 202-225-3121 in order to reach your member of Congress. Ask him or her to vote "Yes" on the Nadler amendment to H.R. 1 tomorrow.
