What is WRONG with my Firefox today?
It's frozen seven or eight times. Just hangs and that's that.

I've restarted, I've cleared the cache and cookies, and everything seems fine.

Then it happens again.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Has anyone ever had this happen?

Is there anything I can do about it short of throwing this fucking computer out the window?

Thank you and don't forget that RUSH LIMBAUGH IS BIG FAT IDIOT.

1. Are you sure it's firefox? Have you tried another browser?
I find firefox glitchy at times, but if I close it and reopen, it usually works ok.

10. I hate IE so much,
I can't even bear to try it.

I've never had this happen before. I have such an affinity for Firefox, it's hard to contemplate switching to another.

I know. I'm nuts.........

it's the browser Google put out, doesn't use as many resources as the others, runs pretty darned solid too

I really like the blank tab page, has all your favorites always listed, has your recent bookmarks and the recent pages you've closed

it's pretty darned awesome

4. What sites are you hanging at? Get the "No scripts" plugin, you will most
likely fix your problems with that alone.

When was the last time you cleared your cache? Defragged your drive (I'm assuming you use winblows).

53. YVW. If you like, try this...
Can you burn a CD?

Click this: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloading?release=desktop-newest&mirror=&arch=i386

Burn to CD.

Leave the CD in your DVD/CD drive, re-boot and see if you like it. This is a very user friendly version of Linux, requires none of the windows "maintenance" and is far more secure and stable than windows.

It runs from the CD (a little slower) and you don't have to install it. If you are like 90% of users, this will do everything you need with fewer headaches.

Now, your windows programs will probably not run and things will look/work a little different, but all your internet stuff will be much faster and far more stable. No anti-virus is needed. If you don't like it, just take out the CD and re-boot and nothing will be changed. If you do, you can install it, or we can help you set up a dual boot so you can use either if you like.

I haven't noticed any particular problems with Firefox though I will admit I'm not quite as pleased with 3.0 as earlier versions. Still, I've always been curious about Opera and decided to try it subsequent to this thread and your post. It's really nice. Is it just my eyes playing tricks or does it render graphics better than some other browsers? Everything looks so clean and sharp. Pretty fast too! Thanks! :hi:

Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 09:38 PM by tridim
The only thing I use it for is Firebug and the error console.

The worst aspect of FF is the Flash plugin. It gets slower every release. As of v10 it's almost unusable on most systems.

18. Mine Does The Opposite
All of a sudden it will speed up my HD and
use nearly all available resources. It stops when I
close one or two self refreshing high demand sites (like the TV Guide).
I wonder if being on dial up has anything to do w/it?

and OxyRush isn't smart enough to qualify as an idiot.

21. TV Guide?
Self-refreshing sites. I never considered them

I have several of them open all the time, and that could be what's making FF crazy.

Never discount how stupid Limpballs is. I'd vote for him as Idiot, although Imbecile or Cretin might be closer to the truth.

Thanks for the hint about the self-refresh. I wonder if that will fix it.

Although, I must admit, Chrome looks pretty slick.....................

22. I loved Firefox for years, but despise FF3.
It's now become even more bloated and slow and hoggish than what it was meant to replace.

Sometimes it uses 100% of my CPU and nearly all my memory, and this is a powerful computer.

I'm about ready to go back to IE.

25. Seems like ever since Firefox 3
Was released, it has a lot of memory leaks, which balloons memory usage. I am using Windows 2000 Pro on my ancient laptop right now, and under Task Manager, it is using 150,000 KB. Firefox will freeze eventually, unless I clear the cache. Now it is at 140,000 KB. I have been using Firefox ever since it was called Firebird.

37. About FF 3..
I had heard so many complaints about it, I did not upgrade.
It still sends me those little box notices, I ignore them.

Same with a lot of upgrades...all are checked "notify me and let me decide"

So I am still happy running FF 2, NO Script, Adblock.
And running whatever Windows was on 2001 XP with Ser. Pack 1.
What ever refuses to load with the the apps I have, I don't need.

I have had as many as 20 windows open at a time ( bit of ADD here, I think) without crashing, as long as I don't run many self refresh sites.

I do clean caches and history at least every other day.

so far, so good.

Linus is in the near future, Mr. D. assures me.
As he has been doing since 2004.

I use Firefox 3 too and I've been two seconds from throwing this whole damn computer in the trash because everything just sloooows down for no damn reason. I might give IE and or even Netscape another look after reading this thread.

It also annoys me immensely that Firefox "jumps." I can be reading a section of a page and then suddenly, the browser will "jump" so that I'm back at the beginning of the page.

48. Check your plugins.
Sometimes a plugin will go off the rails and take Firefox with it.

You can go into Tools->Add-ons to go through your plugins, disable them if you suspect they're acting up, or disable them one at a time and see if that resolves your crashes.

I've also had frequent problems with Flash misbehaving - you might want to consider installing Flashblock to block Flash objects (though you can still click on them if you do want to use them.)

because there was one particular add-on that seemed to preface my first problems with Firefox a few weeks ago. Minor, but noticeable. My geek pal also suggested I go through Add/Remove programs and get rid of anything I've not used in the past six months. I cleaned out quite a few pieces of junk.

I'm gonna go look at Flashblock.

Thank you so much for your help. Greatly appreciated.

55. Sometimes your Firefox profile will become corrupted.
When that happens you would be lucky if it ran at all. Reinstalling your profile will fix it right up.

Also, make sure all of your extensions are compatible with the FF version you are running. If they're not, you can force compatibility with another extension called "Nightly Tester Tools".

Good luck.

Well, another bit of news about Firefox. This is getting interesting. The sucker froze up on me again this afternoon.

So I went and looked for my profile, with Windows XP, and found the file, but I'm not nearly smart enough to do anything with it. I found Chrome there, and deleted that folder, just because I'm not using it. And then I'm going after "Nightly Tester Tools".

This is unfair. I'm far too adorable to have to grapple with something like this. Really. I feel the vapors coming on............

Thank you very much for your help.
