Deflation... so I went with mom to the store to get some gifts
for people back home

Folks the prices at JC Penney were down there, as in three and four bucks for some kid's stuff... and twelve and fifteen for adults (women)

This is classic deflation... not that many folks understand this

Oh and yes, 1930s goes without saying

1. I'm still not seeing it at the grocery store
I'm still trying to figure out why a bag of Doritos chips was $3.99.

14. According to something I read several months ago (and I don't
have a clue where it was), once food rises in price, it rarely ever goes back down. So I think we're stuck. I know I haven't seen much of any change since we had $4 a gallon gas.

but a couple of weeks ago, i went to costco to get some of that yummy rotisserie chicken. the price had actually dropped a dollar! i was astounded and asked the clerk about it. he just laughed and asked me if i'd rather pay the old price, lol.

2. I wish food prices would deflate
Food prices have gone up so much over the last year its ridiculous.

And the commodity prices that were the original excuse for the increased prices collapsed months ago to multi year lows, so were getting screwed.

4. That's because they know food is the ONE THING everyone must have, every day.
And they know most Americans prefer convenience foods or have no clue how to prepare food from scratch.

5. DEBT is factored into the pricing..
debt from trucking companies borowing shitloads of money and from buying up companies loaded with debt (buying out competition gets expensive)

debt from grocers buying out their competitors and taking on their debt...debt for building too many stores in too many places

debt from building bigger, glitzier stores with TOO much "stuff" that goes mostly unsold, and must be continually "put on sale"..

debt from importing foods we USED to grow here..

11. It's those club cards
They've targeted the things low income people buy and put it as high as they could and still keep low income people buying. That stuff won't go down as more and more people are forced to buy cheaper and cheaper food. Items that are higher won't be restocked. I don't think we'll see much of a drop in food prices, just a drop in choices.

18. They are starting, but not as obvious or fast
partly because the margins in food prices are razor thin

But I noticed in a few things like yogurt, a couple pennies, and even bread, again pennies

3. We didn't even exchange gifts at Christmas but just bought stuff for the kids.
Penney's can give their stuff away, a lot of people can't afford it. They're trying to keep everything on at the same time, keep their car and not fall two months behind on their mortgage.

6. busy buying a new wardrobe here
I need one. I've lost a lot of weight (like 50+ lbs.) and none of my old clothes fit any longer.

I kept wearing them anyway because I couldn't afford new ones.

However, lots of GREAT sales right now ...

i.e. llbean.com :D

8. Congrats on the weight loss!
I've dropped 30 pounds and was in the same situation about clothes. I've been trolling the Goodwill here. Every other Saturday is half price day and I've been able to get "transition clothes" very cheap ($4 for jeans, $3 for slacks, $1.50-3 for shirts. Can't beat it. Most of it is barely or hardly worn and in great shape. When I lose more, I'll donate them back.

That said. Dillards has been having awesome sales and I bought a few things.

10. I've got all new duds
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 08:15 PM by CountAllVotes
all dressed up but nowhere to go.

Damn it is slow out there.

I went to Safeway to buy 2 cases of Crystal Geyser water. I wasn't in the store but 30 seconds and I had 5 employees jump me and ask me what I wanted to buy in the store.

I told them the water and they ran and got it and took it out to my car and loaded it in.

No one had a damn f'ng thing to do.

I've never been much of a Safeway customer being they have always been so damned greedy.

Doesn't seem to be paying off much anymore is it?

13. At least in my state, Safeway is one of the only unionized shops,
so I shop there. Besides, their produce is the best!

17. I am lucky I kept some of my old stuff
so that is what I am using right now... but I know exactly what you mean

Hell, wearing some of the sweaters my mom knit for me that didn't fit any longer

I took a shit load to the salvation army... so I know

As to sales, I got a couple pieces a couple months ago, and had to get some underwear too... yep, lost even in that department

7. Is this last year's clearance items, or more current items
I've seen Sears clear out the end of the summer stock back in November with similar prices ($5 - $15 pretty much across the board for various categories of seperates, nothing fancy, of course, but good for casual work clothes), which isn't too bad if there is only two or three racks worth of last year's clearance, but if it's a good portion of the floor stock on sale, that's a very bad indicator for employemnt.
Not only to the store employees that are going to be cut back, but to the suppliers, the drivers, and all the rest of the retail food chain associated with Pennys.

Haele

12. I was in a Trader Joe's and a Walgreen's today.
Both were nearly empty; I've never seen either empty before. In the Walgreen's they were announcing over the intercom that there was an open cash register at "photo". Actually they were all empty.
