Specter's hold on Holder's appointment is PISSING ME OFF!
I have gotten a few emails telling me that they are basically holding it up until he says he won't prosecute the lawbreakers of the last 8 years.

Committee Member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) issued a press release on his website criticizing his Republican colleagues for the delay, saying, among other things, that “Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have asked Eric Holder to make a commitment, before he is even confirmed, that he will not prosecute any Bush Administration officials for their involvement in acts of torture during the last administration.” http://whitehouse.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/?id=E048ED64-4C8C-4096-8BD2-B216A194E037

They are demanding that a LAW MAN promise not to uphold the LAW!! I hope Specter's phone lines are sizzling..

This is hugely infuriating..

2. AND HERE are THE NUMBERs TO CALL: (request from Don Siegelman)
Dear Democratic Underground,
Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania is using cagey political maneuvers to hold up confirmation of President Obama's Attorney General nominee, Eric Holder. Call Sen. Specter's office today and tell him to stop the hold up!

The confirmation of President Obama's choice for U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, is being held up by Senator Arlen Specter and others.

Please call Senator Specter's office and voice your disapproval. Ask the Senator to release his hold on the confirmation of Mr. Holder.

Washington, D.C. Office: 711 Hart Senate Office Building,
District of Columbia 20510-3802
Phone: (202) 224-4254
Fax: (202) 228-1229

* Philadelphia (215) 597-7200
* Pittsburgh (412) 644-3400
* Harrisburg (717) 782-3951
* Scranton (570) 346-2006
* Allentown (610) 434-1444
* Erie (814) 453-3010
* Wilkes Barre (570) 826 6265

As you know, there is much work to be done by the next Attorney General in investigating the firing of the U.S. Attorneys and Karl Rove's involvement in my prosecution. The new Attorney General will be able to facilitate the House Judiciary Committee's investigation of the use of the Department of Justice as a political weapon and those who abused their power.

Also, please urge your delegation to support a full investigation into all of the abuses of power of the Bush Administration.

Tell Congress we cannot let the wrong doings of the past Administration be swept under the rug.

Demand action! Tell Congress to keep digging for the truth!

Thank you so much for all you've done!

Don Siegelman
Governor of Alabama 1999-2003

10. Karl Rove will have to testify
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 08:14 PM by BirminghamExaminer
Karl Rove has been called to testify Feb 2 before a congressional panel led by Rep. Conyers. What most people don't know is that Karl Rove was behind the railroading of Governor http://www.examiner.com/x-1172-Birmingham-Progressive-Politics-Examiner~y2009m1d26-Karl-Rove-to-be-questioned-on-conviction-of-Governor-Siegelman-and-firing-of-US-attorneys">Don Siegelman of Alabama.

There's a lot of support for Governor Siegelman and I hope this gets more media attention.

4. One wonders how this is not obstruction of justice.
The rethugs must be hoping this proposed deal is not in writing anywhere. Typed talking points, anyone?

6. I don't think it has anything to do promising not to prosecute torturers
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 07:53 PM by Hansel
That's a red herring. I heard, and darn it I can't remember where, that the statute of limitations on the attorney firing runs out in March and that they are trying to delay his confirmation so that he can't prosecute for that.

They can't come out and say it is to protect the fools involved in the attorney firings, so they pretend that they are really the tough guys trying to protect the American people and that they are trying to prevent the Democrats from going after the "hero torturers" who have protected us from terrorists all of these years. Whatever.

Notice Alberto's mouth flapping about this today. He knows his head is on the chopping block if Holder gets in there too soon. He could give a crap about those who would be tried for torturing. He's more worried about saving his ass over the attorney firings.

8. You may be right. There ARE no two sides (politically) to
that story. They can't pretend that firing these guys was "keeping us safe". .

14. Holder should respond.....
'If they broke no laws, then they have nothing to worry about.' Republicans should know that very well.

It dumps everything back into the Republicans' laps, and the American People would be fully in support of it. If they don't back down with their demands to NOT prosecute those who may have broken the law, then get very loud about it, so all of America knows exactly what these Republicans are doing.

15. Wait, I thought the Senate Majority leader could ignore a "hold"
That would be Harry Reid, would it not?

Didn't Kucinich or some other Dem try a hold on some piece of legislation and failed?

17. You are correct.
Guess the leadership is still keeping their vacume-packed, mummified, dessicated powder dry.

No sense pissing off the minority party. They might throw a fit and embarrass themselves or something.
